Collected Teachings of Jamyang Gonngga Tenzinpa Gyaltsen JTG16 Collection of Miscellaneous Teachings Collection of Miscellaneous Teachings Response: Scholar Kunga Gyaltsen Collection of Miscellaneous Teachings. Response: Scholar Kunga Gyaltsen. I am delighted to have properly encountered your words, which are like the great drum of the gods. However, regarding the basis-continuum (kun gzhi, Sanskrit ālaya-vijñāna, literally: storehouse consciousness) being divided into 'place' and 'appearance,' this is definitely in line with the views of Sarasvatī-pleasing Nāgārjuna, who divided clarity and emptiness, gross and subtle, pure and impure, and brought them into one. Therefore, all faults are difficult to avert. What other method is there than to accept the nature of reality (chos nyid, Sanskrit dharmatā), self-nature (rang bzhin, Sanskrit svabhāva), and original purity (rnam dag, Sanskrit viśuddha)? Phenomena (chos can), such as the aggregates (phung po, Sanskrit skandha), elements (khams, Sanskrit dhātu), and sense bases (skye mched, Sanskrit āyatana), which appear as impure illusions, when purified by the path of purity, do you not accept that they will transform into self-nature purity? Therefore, all phenomena are inherently pure. Therefore, the great Other-Emptiness (gzhan stong) Madhyamaka (dbu ma) school teaches that the imputed (kun brtags, Sanskrit parikalpita) is temporary and can be purified, while the perfectly established (yongs grub, Sanskrit pariniṣpanna) is immutable in its self-nature. Because this explanation and intention are the same, the many criticisms of it either rebound upon oneself or are extremely difficult to refute. The explanations of wisdom (blo rin) and the basis-continuum, when combined with Dzogchen (rdzogs chen), are difficult to align directly with the teachings of the venerable forefathers. Therefore, all refutations and affirmations of it are excellent. In your state of complete knowledge during sleep, the distinction between consciousness (rnam shes, Sanskrit vijñāna) and wisdom (ye shes, Sanskrit jñāna) is that the basis-continuum is a previously non-existent wisdom, which is said to be newly born from meditating on the inseparability of samsara and nirvana. In that case, not only does it contradict the meaning of wisdom, but even the words become contradictory. If not, then leave the basis-continuum as the basis-continuum. What basis is there for establishing wisdom as something other than the basis-continuum? When the basis-continuum is grasped by skillful means (thabs, Sanskrit upāya), there is nothing other than wisdom. Also, sometimes it is asserted that the clear awareness (gsal rig) that is without obscurations (sgrib med) is innate (lhan skyes). If that is the case, then is the characteristic (mtshan nyid, Sanskrit lakṣaṇa) of the basis-continuum, which is uninterrupted clear awareness, the same or different (log shig)? If it is the same, then it is placed within the basis-continuum. If it is different, then it is appropriate to say what the clear awareness is that is to be cultivated now. Generally, the self-nature (rang gi ngo bo) and characteristic of the basis-continuum of the basis-continuum, as examined by the venerable forefathers, should not be divided into two in terms of its state. It is appropriate to divide 'place' and 'appearance' based on the difference between being grasped by skillful means and not being grasped, and between realization and non-realization. This is the lot of those who have realization, not the state of the basis-continuum itself. If you assert that there are two, then the basis-continuum becomes two. Therefore, someone foolish like me --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
