Therefore, regarding the samatha and vipassana being of one essence and the two ways of guiding them separately, there are two types. The first is the aspect of samatha, which is the meditation of abiding and the wisdom of clarity, the union of samatha and vipassana, abiding in the meaning of non-duality, free from extremes. That is to say, if one realizes it as it is, like innate purity and spontaneous accomplishment, then that is certainly possible. However, before the sudden cause of self-grasping has dissolved into the pure space of the dharmadhatu, all the phenomena of conceptual thoughts that are deluded by sudden causes are ordinary self-nature, that is, the lord of samsara wandering in the wheel of delusion, for the initial practitioners, that is, for those who have not gained certainty in any cause-and-effect phenomena, and who have only engaged in hearing and practice, it will become an obstacle. Therefore, there are two ways of guiding the two, samatha and vipassana, as being of one essence, and guiding them as being separate. The first is the aspect of samatha, which is the meditation of abiding and the wisdom of clarity, the union of samatha and vipassana, abiding in the meaning of non-duality, free from extremes, and holding samsara and nirvana as naturally pure phenomena. In such samadhi, abiding in a state of unwavering one-pointedness is samatha, and its characteristic is the aspect of clarity of discriminating wisdom that perceives things as non-existent, which is vipassana. Root verse: There are two distinctions in the second aspect: that which arises from wisdom and that which arises from oral instruction. That which arises from wisdom is in accordance with sound, and one-pointedly pacifies the meaning of hearing, and from this, understanding the meaning is the characteristic of vipassana. That which arises from oral instruction follows the meaning, and the mind is unwavering, which is samatha, and the knowledge of its self-nature is vipassana. That is to say, that which arises from wisdom is attending to the words of the twelve categories of scriptures, which is in accordance with sound. One-pointedly pacifying the meaning of hearing is abiding. That which becomes the means of understanding the meaning from this is the characteristic of vipassana. That is to say, if one does not know the difference between samatha being the preliminary practice of meditation and vipassana being the main practice, then even after arriving at the place one needs to go, one still does not abandon the effort of traveling the path, just as one cannot attain the pacification of the senses.

When evil is equal, there is no need to rely on antidotes. Mediocre ones become accustomed to the union of clarity and purity, and all discriminations of good and evil dissolve into the realm of reality. Inferior ones initially seek only calm abiding. Once they have gained stability in what they focus on, they become accustomed to the wisdom of insight, individually discriminating. Eventually, just as one does not find earth and stones in the Golden Land, whatever thoughts arise from the mind and mental events, appearance and mind are inseparable, and manifest as great primordial liberation. That is to say, in short, for those of superior faculties, all the aggregates of afflictive thoughts that appear in the face of delusion, like clouds gathering in the sky, no matter what conditions arise that cause them to swell, their essence does not go beyond emptiness. Similarly, if the essence of whatever thoughts of good and evil arise manifests as the Dharmakaya, that is, emptiness, then good and evil are equal, and therefore there is no need to rely on antidotes to afflictions. Those of middling faculties, with clarity of mind, realize that the object to be abandoned and the act of abandoning are of one essence, and by becoming accustomed to clarity in union, all discriminations of good and evil dissolve into the realm of reality. Those of inferior faculties, initially, as a means of pacifying all thoughts such as afflictions, practice without distraction, seeking only the means of abiding in the mind. When they have gained unwavering stability in what they focus on, they become accustomed to the wisdom of insight, individually discriminating, realizing that calm abiding is without inherent nature. Eventually, just as one does not find earth and stones when one goes to the Golden Land, the mind, that is, the object from which all thoughts arise, and mental events, that is, whatever thoughts of good and evil arise, all appearances dawn as the play of the mind, like reflections in a mirror, and the two minds of the plan are inseparable, like water and waves, and manifest as great primordial liberation. That is what it means. Root text: As the supreme method, whatever thoughts arise, do not reject them, do not fabricate them, do not follow them, do not move from your natural state, and you will attain all the qualities of pure faculties, such as the eyes of the gods, the eyes of the Buddhas, and clairvoyance. That is to say, from the moment insight wisdom arises, as the supreme method, that is, to quickly see that self-arisen wisdom, whatever thoughts of good and evil arise, do not reject them, but relax in their own place, and do not fabricate them, that is, do not anticipate or analyze afterwards, without effort.
