The awareness that transcends mind is the supreme characteristic of the Great Perfection of Naturalness. Those who realize are liberated into awareness from the ground, while sentient beings who do not realize wander in that very state. If distinguished by aspects, it is like water and a water bubble. That is to say, those who consider the nature of reality to be beyond mind, mind is accompanied by ignorance, and from it, delusion and conceptualization arise continuously, which is the arising of mind. And the unchanging essence of these is awareness. This is the Dharma of the Great Perfection of Naturalness. Those who realize in this way, as it is, from the primordial ground, a little wisdom dawns, and awareness becomes the basis for liberation. Sentient beings who do not realize in this way, clinging to consciousness as self, wander in that very state. If these two are distinguished, it is like water without defects and a water bubble becoming a defect. In the stage of the path, the mind merely remains in the state of self-luminous non-thought, and awareness merely remains in the state of no object, although the two are similar in the state of non-thought. The former is mixed with the latent tendencies of the alaya, and there is the grasping and the grasped of consciousness, like a hidden thorn that is not obvious. The latter has the distinction of awareness, such as the disappearance of thoughts and reflections, and the realization of the liberation of samsara and nirvana. Root text: Although mind and awareness are similar in the state of non-thought, awareness is without self-nature and transparent, while mind swirls and is ignorant like a whirlpool. Awareness is like the moon in the empty sky, clear to the depths, while mind is like the fifteenth moon, mixed with objects. Clear and without object is the quality of awareness, while being completely mixed with objects is the characteristic of mind. That is to say, even in the state of non-thought, when mind and awareness are similar, awareness is without self-nature, and the initial wisdom is not defiled by any good or bad, it is completely transparent. The example of mind is like the water in a pond or puddle, swirling and ignorant due to the lack of awareness. The true example of awareness is like the moon in the empty sky, although the phenomena of mixing with all objects dissolve into the dharmadhatu, the qualities of the moon do not diminish, and it remains clear. The example of mind is like the fifteenth moon mixing with all objects, clear and without object is the quality of awareness, and being completely mixed with objects is the characteristic of mind. This is self-arisen.

In the realm of wisdom, in the aspect of non-conceptualization, self-abiding awareness is spontaneously accomplished. That is, the clarity of awareness, which is not of a different kind, is unceasing, yet it does not conceptualize after its object, does not think, does not grasp. Like the appearance of an image in a mirror, from one substance and one essence, not establishing its own characteristics, is the quality of awareness. The consciousness that appears in the object is mind, because it does not transcend the grasped and the grasper. Therefore, the shamatha that focuses single-pointedly on the empty object, and the vipassanā that analyzes it, whether or not the term of union is established, because it enjoys the object of grasping there, it does not surpass worldly meditation. Therefore, recognizing awareness as directly pointing, knowing how to relax in that state, the adventitious defilements of the mind, not being established in the nature of awareness, naturally vanish, purifying without a trace, and will not be stained by habitual tendencies, so it is said. The root is: That is awareness, the self-abiding wisdom, not relying on the means of meditation, free from sinking and agitation. The mind is single-pointed on the object of focus, connected with samadhi and the dependent and the depended upon. Awareness appears on the object, but is not overcome by appearance, like mercury falling on the ground. The mind is with the aspect of the grasped and the grasper, mixed with the side of taking close to conceptual thoughts. Although awareness does not abandon the nature of mind to another place, mind and awareness do not coincide, so with object and aspect, self and one substance, the afflictions also combine and flee. Thus, awareness is the self-abiding wisdom, not relying on the means of the place of meditation, free from its own nature of sinking and agitation, and the mind is the samadhi that focuses single-pointedly on the object of focus with intelligence, mutually connected with the dependent and the depended upon, not transcending the grasped and the grasper. Although awareness appears on the object, it is not overcome by any appearance, like mercury falling into the dust. The mind is mixed with the aspect of taking close to all conceptual thoughts, good and bad, with the fault of having both the object of the grasped and the aspect of the grasper. Although awareness does not abandon the nature of mind to another place, the meaning of mind and awareness not coinciding is like the difference in time between sleeping and not sleeping. Also, with object, aspect, self, and possessor, realizing as one essence.
