It is said in the scriptures that this is a sign of accumulating merit. That is to say, those who are lazy and lack diligence, because they have not practiced, will destroy the wisdom of previous knowledge, such as hearing and thinking. When one becomes wealthy, being arrogant due to the increase of wealth, and using wealth for non-virtuous deeds, will destroy wealth. Whether it is an enemy or a neutral person, extreme hatred will destroy good deeds. Whether it is oneself or others, being attached to women, food, wealth, etc., will destroy true sublimity, that is, being born in higher realms. For these reasons, pure wisdom that is not disturbed by karma, afflictions, and sins, can be used by the power of wisdom and merit, which is said in the scriptures to be a sign of accumulating merit in the past. This is a continuous quotation with sources. The common cause of merit is the special quality of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, let alone those beings who seek liberation and omniscience? As it is said in the Jataka tales, in the past there was a king named Light Power, who had five sons, namely, Form Power, Diligence Power, Patience Power, Wisdom Power, and Merit Power, each of whom clung to their own strengths and took pride in them. At that time, Merit Power said: Without merit, the other four powers are of no use, so merit is very important, and all the good deeds of samsara and nirvana are only the power of merit. Although he said so, the other four brothers were attached to their own strengths and did not accept his statement. After that, in order to understand their abilities, the father sent them to other places in ordinary attire. Form Power, because of his outstanding appearance, could live merely by the enjoyment of people's love and gatherings. Diligence Power was able to carry sandalwood from a turbulent river, which others could not do, and he could live merely by the enjoyment brought about by this ability. Patience Power could live merely by the reward he received from it. Wisdom Power could live only by the gains from mediating disputes between two merchants. Merit Power entered the home of a poor man, and there appeared a large amount of wealth, grain, gold, and silver.
