Just as all things that function in accordance with appearances are called "functioning," such as the sun, moon, and butter lamps dispelling darkness, and horses and cattle that can be ridden and used for carrying loads, these are the correct conventional truths. Furthermore, even if images of painted butter lamps, the sun, moon, and wooden carts appear, they do not function like correct conventional truths, and these are known as incorrect conventional truths. The ultimate truth is the reality of one's own mind, the way of abiding in its nature, that is, both samsara and nirvana are not different in essence. From the very beginning, it is the nature beyond thought and expression, free from elaboration. To realize this is considered good, and not realizing it is considered bad, but both of these notions should not be clung to. Moreover, the two truths are: appearance is the conventional truth, and emptiness is the ultimate truth. The union of appearance and emptiness, like the reflection of the moon in a pond, is such that from the aspect of appearance, it is the conventional truth, and the non-establishment of the nature of the moon's reflection is the ultimate truth. The consciousness of the five objects are: the consciousnesses of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, like a painting of a rainbow where the colors do not mix, grasping at the enjoyment of the five desires such as form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Regarding this and that, clinging to this and so on, these illusory appearances of discriminating thoughts of negation and affirmation must be examined as the eight examples of illusion. All forms that appear in the field of eye consciousness should be seen as illusions, mirages, and optical illusions. The sounds heard in the field of ear consciousness are like echoes in a valley. The smells in the field of nose consciousness, the tastes in the field of tongue consciousness, and the tangible objects that appear in the field of body consciousness should be seen as illusions, dreams, lightning, and clouds. The phenomena that appear in the three times in the field of mind consciousness, like the moon in water and bubbles, should ultimately be analyzed and endured through the discrimination of consciousness. Because it is not ultimate, and because consciousness is the self-nature of conventional illusion, even if one considers the reality of one's own mind to be one, it is not established, and because it is not established as many, the various characteristics that are even more contradictory than the former have never existed in the realm of consciousness, but appear as if they exist, and this does not go beyond the fabrication of consciousness.

Regarding the classification of philosophical tenets, the so-called "ultimate truth of knowledge" means that even if one analyzes the beginning, middle, and end with intellect, one cannot determine what "this" is, and it lacks the characteristics of an entity. The so-called "obtaining the ultimate truth of things and destroying them" means that no matter how large or small, any material object is pounded and ground with a hammer and pestle appropriate to it, until it becomes indivisible particles, which is considered the ultimate truth according to the Hearer Vehicle (Śrāvakayāna) schools. Whatever has a function is considered here to be the valid conventional truth. Other than that, the so-called ultimate truth does not mean that there is an entity with characteristics, but it exists in terms of its non-emptiness. Others believe that conventional dharmas have entities and characteristics. The saying "explained by the characteristics of self and general" means that the objects of manifest appearance, that is, the functions that appear to the objects of the five senses, are not distinguished separately as valid conventional truths, that is, pervading by self-characteristics. Self-characteristic, entity, and ultimate truth are coextensive with valid conventional truths. The objects of conceptual appearance are general characteristics, appearing as false conventional truths. General characteristics, non-existent dharmas, and conventional truth are considered coextensive with the indivisible particles that the Hearer Vehicle considers to be the ultimate truth. These are roughly stated according to the Sautrāntika school, and are essentially in accordance with logic. Appearing as the two, grasper and grasped, that is, the grasped is the self of phenomena, and the grasper is the self of person, the object appearing as the two, the five senses and the consciousness of mind as the subject, is the conventional truth. Other than that, knowing that dharmas are non-dual is considered the ultimate truth, which is the tenet of the Mind-Only (Cittamātra) school. How all that appears as the object of the six aggregates is established as conventional truth, like the characteristic of illusion. In the ultimate sense, nothing is established, like space, which is the view of the Svātantrika-Madhyamaka school. Thus, appearance itself is the conventional truth, and emptiness is the ultimate truth, and any imputation of terms is free from the extremes of elaboration. At the time of appearance, there is no birth, cessation, going, or coming. And the conventional dharmas, which are considered to be dependent and real entities, are also of its establishment.
