As stated in the scriptures, it is crucial to rely on a Lama with humility, abandoning pride, like a sweeper or someone holding a broom; and relinquishing arrogance, like a prominent ox that has lost its horns. If you have wealth, make offerings to the Lama, the fourth Jewel, and whenever needed, dedicate your body and speech to service. All these actions will never be in vain. Among the three ways to please the Lama—material offerings, service with body and speech, and practice—practice is considered the supreme. Do not view any of the Lama's actions with a distorted perspective. In ancient India, most yogis and free beings, except for a few, ate impure things, lived by begging, or focused solely on earning a living by doing menial labor, being slaves, etc. Furthermore, there were those who engaged in sinful acts in the manner of ordinary people, such as hunters, fishermen, and those who made a living by catching birds, even more degraded than the fallen. However, until one's own actions are controlled by the All-Creating King (Kun byed rgyal po), there is immeasurable fault in scrutinizing the faults of others. Even the monk Legskar (legs skar) or Karzang (skar bzang), who was well-versed in the twelve divisions of the scriptures, was influenced by evil. Even though the Buddha's actions were completely pure, he still thought the Buddha was deceiving him. Therefore, strive not to be controlled by erroneous negative thoughts. If I find that the Lama's compassion towards me has diminished, then I should recognize that it is because the holy protector has seen my hidden faults of body, speech, and mind, and that now is the time to discipline me with scolding. I should rejoice and confess. Such a conscious person will not be controlled by demons. When the Lama rises, one should not remain seated but should immediately rise. When the Lama is seated, upon arriving in front of him, one should inquire about his health and offer whatever necessities are needed. When the Lama says "Go" and departs, as an attendant, one should not walk with one's back to the Lama. One should not step on the Lama's footprints, and because the right side is the honorable position, one should not walk starting from that side. Seats and mounts are inferior to the Lama; everyone should ride their own, etc.

This is what is called the decline of merit. Furthermore, when opening and closing doors, avoid things like slamming the door, wearing extravagant clothes and ornaments that exceed the limit, showing a dark and angry face instead of a smile, false and frivolous laughter, speaking irrelevant idle talk, disrespecting the lama, and being overly familiar and casual without reverence. It is very important to tame the three doors of body, speech, and mind and serve the lama in peace. To be angry with the lama, to scold and curse him, is to be a person who curses and hates. Do not befriend such a person, and if you have the ability, repel his attacks and turn away from him. If he speaks triumphantly, then the power of the sin of that decline is especially strong, so it is important to be wary of damaging your own vows. Furthermore, the types of vows include being comfortable with whomever you associate with, like a belt, without being overly familiar or casual; being able to associate with superiors, inferiors, and equals with consistent thoughts and actions, like salt, which flavors whatever you eat or drink; having patience like a pillar for the harm of others, especially the lama's reprimands, etc.; and being close and friendly to the lama's entourage, relatives, and Vajra brothers and sisters, just like relying on the best pond. Just as ducks and other waterfowl rely on lakes of various sizes in the world, and bees enjoy various gardens and taste nectar, one should always maintain joy, respect, and faith towards holy beings, based on the wonderful conduct of a close attendant, without weariness or fatigue, flawlessly accepting the lama's instructions and drawing near with faith, thereby tasting the flavor of the lama's suchness and all-knowing wisdom and qualities being integrated into one's own mind. A disciple with firm vows who is sure to enter the conduct of following the lama, for the accumulation of merit of the supreme lama, makes offerings upwards and gives downwards, and for the accumulation of wisdom, in the meaning of view, meditation, action, and result, whether in the three practices of hearing, contemplation, and meditation, or in the generation stage and completion stage, should maintain a single-minded conduct that is consistent with the lama's, running errands, and cleaning the inner and outer chambers.
