So it is said. Therefore, if the holy one who is hoped to be a guide is not carefully examined, the accumulation of virtuous deeds of foolish believers will be wasted, and obtaining leisure is a rare opportunity, only once. If combined with a story, once upon a time, a person carrying a heavy burden went to a forest where the moon was not bright, and there was a huge poisonous snake stretching its body. That person mistakenly thought it was the shadows of two trees, as if to meet and destroy them, and would be deceived. The lama who is said in the sutras and tantras to have exhausted all faults and possessed all virtues is the embodiment of the wisdom of all Buddhas and the realm of compassion, appearing in the world in the form of a person for the sake of taming beings, and therefore is the supreme root of all siddhis, both supreme and common. If, in the straightforward sense, it is in harmony with all actions, then, in the ultimate sense, it is contrary to all those who have the thoughts and actions of the eight worldly dharmas. Because it has a secret meaning, it is more excellent than all habits in the place of names, is skilled in cutting off the dualistic grasping of doubt, and is able to endure the hardships of other heretical paths and asceticism. Such a holy protector is like a great ship that liberates from the ocean of samsara, and will not err on the supreme path of liberation and omniscience, like a merchant's navigator going to an ocean island, and like a great rain of nectar that gathers the flames of karma and affliction, and like the sun and moon that dispel the darkness of ignorance. Because the power it bears is very great, it is like the earth, and like the wish-fulfilling tree, the source of benefit and happiness, and like the good vase that contains all the treasures of the sutras and tantras, it is even more excellent than the wish-fulfilling jewel that fulfills all needs and desires. For all, good and bad, it is free from closeness, distance, attachment, and aversion, and loves with equanimity, like parents. Surpassing the love of desire, it has vast and swift compassion, like a river. Not just arrogance, it has unwavering joy, like the king of mountains, and equanimity undisturbed by the thoughts of closeness, distance, attachment, and aversion, like a rain cloud. Such a lama, a virtuous friend, whose qualities of the three secrets are all Buddhas

If one can be in harmony with that, even if harmed, one can attain the path of happiness. For that person who serves with sincere faith and reverence, the good fruits of auspiciousness and qualities of higher realms and definite goodness will surely fall like rain. Moreover, that supreme lama who shows the path of liberation is like a doctor to a patient, a farewell escort to a guest, a fortress to the fearful, a guide to a merchant, and a helmsman to a sailor. Because one cannot withstand the fear of the enemies of birth, death, and afflictions, one should rely on him as a refuge. Those who draw near to him are fortunate disciples, while those who turn away are not. Like a cracked vessel, the so-called essence (referring to the Dharma) cannot benefit a disciple who has broken vows. Those evil disciples are satisfied with merely receiving a small amount of wealth. At that time, they pretend to have faith and reverence, but in reality, they are like the changing of the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The characteristics of disciples who should be abandoned are: first, even if they are guided to do good and abandon evil, they cannot enter the path of Dharma due to their evil minds and being lost, just like driving a wild yak into a pen. Second, even if they are urged to study listening and contemplation, they hate asceticism and desire to pursue only this life. Finally, they imitate the actions of evil friends, side with them, and ultimately go astray, like a wild man at the edge of the forest. Those disciples who are of two minds are eager to flee to another place when they are with the holy lama, and when they go to another place, they are inclined towards sin. If the holy protector specifically urges them to go to a quiet place to practice, they will fall into a state of helplessness, like the tip of a blade of grass following the wind, bending sometimes to the east and sometimes to the west. They cannot stand firm in either worldly or Dharma matters. With an evil disposition and hypocritical behavior, they approach the lama like musk with flattering words, and then obtain the precious Dharma such as the teachings of ripening and liberation through false means.
