May this confession and virtue become the cause for being embraced by the glorious Lama. Mangalam! Herein dwells the continuous stream of inner practice nectar rain. Namo Guru Bheṣajya Rājāya (Homage to the Guru, the King of Medicine)! Having prostrated to the unsurpassed one who dispels suffering, together with the Sugata's (Buddha's) sons, I shall spread the rain of wisdom nectar that purifies the swamp of suffering sickness. When a person is tormented by a disease, in order to purify obscurations and complete accumulations by relying on that disease, and to be permanently liberated from the swamp of disease, one should train the mind in this way: Firstly, understanding the disease as a virtue, knowing it as a door to purify obscurations; secondly, knowing the disease as a teacher, being mindful; thirdly, knowing the disease as a friend on the path, engaging in the practice of generosity and so forth. Among these three, the first is: In this samsara (cyclic existence), there are various kinds of suffering that are extremely vast, and we, who are destined to be born there involuntarily, do not think about the suffering of samsara during moments of fleeting happiness, and we remain heedless without accomplishing our own benefit. But this suffering of disease eliminates faults such as heedlessness and arrogance, and it is a special door for purifying obscurations. As it is said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra* (Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life): 'Moreover, the virtue of suffering is that it eliminates arrogance through weariness.' As it is said, having a sense of weariness towards suffering becomes the basis for all virtues, such as generating the mind of definite emergence from samsara. In particular, in this world of Jambudvipa (rose-apple continent) in this age of strife, merely having a headache can purify even the suffering of the Avici hell (uninterrupted hell), as it is repeatedly stated in many sutras. Although this realm is impure and filled with the suffering of the five degenerations due to the Buddha's aspiration, great-hearted heroes are born here and quickly attain enlightenment, thus accomplishing the complete maturation, ripening, and purification. Therefore, one should rejoice that even this disease of mine will surely purify the many negative karmas accumulated from before. The second point is that the unbearable and long-lasting suffering of the three lower realms, which is far worse than my current disease, has been experienced by all beings in countless past lives. If I do not strive for liberation now, I will have to experience suffering in countless future lives. But I did not know this before. Now, if even this little bit of disease is unbearable, how can I endure the endless suffering that is greater than this? Now is the time when the precious teachings of the Buddha, which are the means to permanently transcend suffering, are present, so no matter what, if I do not die, I must cross the ocean of samsara in this life. If that is not accomplished, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even in death, offer the body, possessions, and virtuous deeds of the three times to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and make a strong aspiration to attain the supreme perfect enlightenment in the next life. Such a strong aspiration will not be in vain. Generate this kind of intention. Other sentient beings remain in the nature of suffering, yet they do not realize it. They continue to experience suffering in endless samsara because their minds are obscured by the darkness of ignorance, and they are not free. I will eliminate all their suffering and grant them temporary and lasting happiness. To be able to do this, I pray for the blessings of the Guru and the Three Jewels. Repeat this prayer often. In short, no matter how much suffering you endure, like putting on strong armor, prepare to accomplish the great benefit of yourself and others. From now on, be mindful. Because I was unmindful in the past, I was controlled by karma and afflictions, so I unwillingly suffer this illness. If I had attained liberation раньше, why would I be sick now? Not only that, if I had раньше properly adopted and abandoned the causes and effects of karma, suffering would not occur. Because I was unmindful in the past, I suffer this misfortune. From now on, do not act as раньше. Do not trust this body that is destined to be abandoned even if you do not get sick, this city of disease, this body that is decaying day by day. Relying on this pus-filled body, accumulate vast merit, and at the time of death, like a full moon, fill your heart with hope and strive for the cause of perfect happiness in future lives. Keep a firm mind of mindfulness. Some people cannot diligently practice virtue when they are not sick, but when they are frightened by illness, they begin to prostrate, purify obscurations, etc. Therefore, illness becomes a virtuous friend. Therefore, rely on the adverse condition of illness to accumulate merit and rely on skillful means to transform it into a support for the path through mind training. Especially for those who teach the Dharma, practice cutting, or engage in practice, if I usually pretend to teach the Dharma to others and guide others, now that I am sick, I should see if I can transform this adverse condition into the path and whether my practice has reached the key point. This is like using a scale to measure temperature. Measure yourself and do not decorate yourself with pleasant Dharma or beautiful Dharma like раньше. Do not be like a monk who eats his fill and basks in the sun. When adverse conditions arise, you become ordinary. Do your best to turn the adverse condition of illness into a support for practice. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
