Although there are many other dependent originations, if one understands the key point of the uninterrupted cause and effect of 'this arising, that arises' and the profound point of the continuous dependent origination with a definite number, then all those systems have the same meaning. Recognizing the key point that dependent origination is difficult to understand will lead to great respect. Secondly, just as the body cherishes life, regarding such a difficult-to-understand and meaningful dependent origination, among all the Buddha's teachings and paths, the most precious dependent origination, wanting to hear it, one asks: If the twelve links of dependent origination are summarized, where will they be summarized? It is explained from 'they are summarized into three.' The twelve links of dependent origination spoken by the Buddha are completely contained within the three: afflictions, karma, and suffering. If one wonders how the twelve links are summarized into three, then among the twelve links, the first, ignorance (Tibetan: མ་རིག་པ།), the eighth, craving (Tibetan: སྲེད་པ།), and the ninth, grasping (Tibetan: ལེན་པ་), these three are the dharmas of affliction. The second, formation (Tibetan: འདུ་བྱེད་), and the tenth, existence (Tibetan: སྲིད་པ་), these two are the karma that propels. Apart from these five, the remaining results, namely, consciousness (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཤེས།), name and form (Tibetan: མིང་གཟུགས།), six sense sources (Tibetan: སྐྱེ་མཆེད།), contact (Tibetan: རེག་པ།), feeling (Tibetan: ཚོར་བ།), birth (Tibetan: སྐྱེ་བ།), old age and death (Tibetan: རྒ་ཤི་), these seven are also suffering. The word 'also' is جمع, meaning that unwanted encounters and desired separations are included therein. Alternatively, the word 'also' refers not only to these seven themselves, but also to the states of karma and affliction, which are also inseparable from suffering. Thus, the twelve links are summarized into three types of dharmas, completely contained therein without the slightest omission. Thirdly, how do karma, afflictions, and suffering arise? From 'among the three, karma' to 'revolving' is explained in one verse. From the three afflictions arise the two karmas, that is, from ignorance arises formation, and from craving and grasping arises existence. From the two karmas arise the seven bases of suffering, that is, from formation arises consciousness to feeling, and from existence arises birth and old age. From the seven bases of suffering, the three afflictions also arise again, that is, relying on these bases, the three afflictions arise through direct and indirect means. Even for one base, it is the result of the former and the cause of the latter. Therefore, the cause and effect are uninterrupted, and the wheel of samsara, like a revolving wheel of fire, revolves repeatedly without interruption. Existence, that is, the three realms, is the place where one revolves. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is an ordinary being? It is a sentient being in samsara (cyclic existence). How do they revolve? They revolve continuously like a wheel. Although similar, they are not entirely the same. Just as a wheel turns in sequence, samsara does not necessarily turn in sequence, but drifts in various high and low ways. Therefore, describing ordinary beings as the 'wheel of samsara' is to illustrate its uncertainty. The fourth question is: Having thus produced various bodies in samsara, what is the so-called 'sentient being' that is the master or sovereign of all this? What are their actions or responsibilities? It is from all 'causes' to 'non-existent dharmas'. In this state of holding various samsaras, as the maker or goer, all sentient beings, the former moment is the 'cause' and the latter moment is the 'effect'. In that state, it is merely conceptually established as a whole, as one, as permanent, and so on. Because what is conceptually established is not truly existent, all sentient beings are the result of relying on the cause of the previous moment, a false, temporary dharma, merely a conceptually established state. Therefore, the so-called 'sentient being' has no independently existing self-nature. The way of having no self-nature is: in the causal stage, that later person has not yet been born, so it does not exist; if there is no previous cause, the later effect cannot be produced; when it is produced, the previous cause has ceased, so the previous and subsequent states cannot be one. Therefore, the permanent, single, independent 'self' that sentient beings cling to is not established. Therefore, after analyzing in this way, if there is no dependence, it will certainly become like a lotus in the sky, impossible to exist. If it exists, it must be produced dependently, or from a cause. Since it is produced from a cause, it cannot have its own self-nature, because what did not exist before is fabricated by conditions, and there is no difference from an image. In short, what arises from conditions is itself a sign of emptiness. If things have self-nature, they should arise from one of the four ways: self, other, etc. However, after analyzing in this way, it is found that things do not arise from these four ways, so it should be known that everything arises dependently. Through the reason of arising dependently, it is known that things do not have self-nature, and are empty. Then, who goes from here to there? And what are these dharmas of coming and going? These dharmas of samsara, and the five afflictions that are their root, if their self-nature is analyzed, are also empty and cannot be found. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
