Therefore, what the Buddha said, 'The method to reverse samsara is the path to cease dependent origination,' is a great path unknown to Brahma and other beings, and it is an unprecedented Dharma wheel. So, what is this profound dependent origination? In essence, in Sanskrit, it is: 'ye dharmā hetuprabhavā hetuṅ teṣāṃ tathāgato hy avadat, teṣāṃ ca yo nirodha evaṃ vādī mahāśramaṇaḥ.' Translated into Tibetan, it is: 'ཆོས་རྣམས་ཐམས་ཅད་རྒྱུ་ལས་བྱུང་། །དེ་རྒྱུ་དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པས་གསུང་། །རྒྱུ་ལ་འགོག་པ་གང་ཡིན་པ། །དགེ་སྦྱོང་ཆེན་པོས་འདི་སྐད་གསུངས། །' (All dharmas arise from causes; the Tathagata has told the cause; and also what their cessation is; this the Great Ascetic declares). The meaning here is that all dharmas do not arise without cause or naturally, but arise from their respective causes and conditions in interdependence. Such a 'cause' is not created by time or Ishvara, as the non-Buddhists say, but 'this arises because of that, and that does not arise because of this,' arising from such causes and conditions. Therefore, the Tathagata taught the Sutra of Dependent Origination. So, how to reverse the cause of affliction? The Buddha taught the correct method to reverse the cause of affliction, thereby attaining the state of Nirvana. This path can only be taught by the Great Ascetic, the Buddha Bhagavan, and no other beings in the world, including gods, can speak of such a path. Therefore, to explain the meaning of such dependent origination, six aspects are needed: 1. Identifying the nature of the twelve links of dependent origination; 2. Explaining the way they are grouped into three; 3. Revealing how they arise in dependence; 4. Explaining the emptiness of dependent origination; 5. Proving it with examples; 6. Advising that liberation is attained by seeing the reality of dependent origination, which is free from the two extremes. First, from the limbs to the teachings, this is explained. That is, in order to reverse the cause and effect of the afflicted side, the Buddha Bhagavan taught twelve different limbs in a way that neither increases nor decreases, explaining that they are interdependent and interconnected, which is the meaning of dependent origination. For example, 'this arises because of that,' that is, ignorance conditions action, and so on. 'Ignorance' is the opposite of perceiving the true state of all dharmas, that is, the stainless reality, and it is a false conceptualization. From this, grasping 'self' and 'other' arises, leading to afflictions such as attachment and aversion. ], "english_translations": [ "The karma of accumulating actions is called 'Action' (འདུ་བྱེད།, Karma). These actions cause consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ།, Vijnana) to arise in whatever place it takes birth. Because of these actions, consciousness, in the place of birth, revolves together with name and form (མིང་གཟུགས།, Nama-rupa)—that is, other aggregates (ཕུང་པོ།, Skandha), which can be expressed as form (གཟུགས།, Rupa). This state of accomplishment is called 'Name and Form'. From name and form, the five sense organs (དབང་པོ་ལྔ།, Five sense organs) such as the eye and the mind (ཡིད།, Mind) arise, and the stage of accomplishment of these six sources (སྐྱེ་མཆེད།, Ayatana) is called 'Six Sources'. The state of the six sources being manifestly joined with their respective six objects (ཡུལ།, Objects) is called 'Contact' (རེག་པ།, Sparsha), which is the meaning of the meeting of inner and outer objects and faculties. When there is contact, whatever mental feeling (སེམས་བྱུང།, Mental factors) arises from that is called 'Feeling' (ཚོར་བ།, Vedana). When that feeling arises, one does not remain indifferent, but rather clings to it in a manner of accepting and rejecting and controlling it; that state is called 'Craving' (སྲེད་པ།, Trishna). Not just staying with craving, but taking it to heart or fully engaging in it is called 'Grasping' (ལེན་པ།, Upadana). Thus, the state of having already grasped in one's own continuum becomes the cause for accomplishing a result, and that accumulated karma is called 'Becoming' (སྲིད་པ།, Bhava), because it accomplishes the becoming of the future life. When that karma manifests as becoming, it is called 'Birth' (སྐྱེ་བ།, Jati), because it is the accomplishment of the fruit of karma. Thus, once birth is accomplished, since it is a conditioned phenomenon (འདུས་བྱས་ཀྱི་ཆོས།, Conditioned phenomena), aging (རྒ་བ།, Jara) which is the change of state, and ultimately death (ཤི་བ།, Marana) which is destruction, are also accomplished. These two actually show the impermanence (མི་རྟག་པ།, Impermanence) of birth, and therefore they are placed in one limb. Thus, afflictions (ཉོན་མོངས་པ།, Klesha) accumulate karma, and the birth thrown by karma, since it is impermanent and bound by actions, also symbolizes that suffering (སྡུག་བསྔལ།, Dukkha) also becomes the basis of suffering, therefore samsara (འཁོར་བ།, Samsara) exists like a cycle, in the manner of dependent origination (རྟེན་ནས་འབྱུང་བ།, Dependent origination)." "These twelve links of dependent origination (རྟེན་འབྲེལ་བཅུ་གཉིས།, Twelve links of dependent origination), as long as there is a result thrown by the previous cause, it will become the cause for the later; as long as there is a cause, the result will not reverse, and the result will be accomplished. After being accomplished, it becomes the later cause. There is no interruption between this cause and effect, and it cycles in the same way as before. The twelve links of dependent origination, completed by two rounds of cause and effect, are symbolized and explained by the present intermediate birth, and can also be transferred to other places. Knowing the key point of the cause and effect cycling back and forth like sparks is the most supreme of all wisdoms. Among them, the way of establishing the cause and effect of dependent origination on the five aggregates (ཕུང་པོ་ལྔ།, Five aggregates) at each stage is according to the view of the Shravakas (ཉན་ཐོས།, Shravaka), and the dependent origination of momentary arising and ceasing..." ] } --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
