Like bubbles floating on water, one should know that all things are impermanent, merely aggregates of the five skandhas, and empty of inherent existence. Therefore, the three kinds of compassion based on this should arise in the same way. These eight similes, as stated in the sutras, should be understood as the latter dispelling the doubts of the former. Thus, one should comprehend all phenomena, both internal and external, encompassed by such dependent origination, as being like illusions and dreams. In this way, samsara is merely generated by the habitual patterns of mistaken appearances. The word 'again' prevents deluded thoughts; if one recognizes that things are impermanent, suffering, empty, and selfless, one will not be deluded about things. Without delusion, there will be no attachment. Without attachment, there will be no hatred. Without hatred, there will be no karma. Without karma, there will be no grasping. Without grasping, there will be no manifestation of existence. Without existence, there will be no birth. Without birth, there will be no suffering for body and mind. Therefore, if these five causes are not accumulated here, no result will arise elsewhere; this is called liberation. Thus, the nature of suffering, the cause of samsara, flows from afflictions. What stops the wheel of existence? The only path is to cease through the gate of emptiness, and the path of reversing the causal order leads to the fruit of liberation. From affliction to purification, there are two causes and two effects, which are shown by the Four Noble Truths. The sixth is revealed through the progression from extremely subtle things to complete liberation. Therefore, all phenomena arise from causes and conditions, and all these things are extremely subtle and difficult to discern; hence the phrase 'extremely subtle things' is used. 'Again,' the idea that holding onto the existence of things is not only wrong but also a burden. Some people think that things are annihilated, or that there is no future life, or do not understand the profound appearance of dependent origination, and see ultimate truth as being like a rabbit's horn. These unwise people! Things arise from causes and conditions, and if the causes and conditions do not cease, the result will not stop; they do not see this truth. Or, even for extremely subtle things, like dust particles and moments, they first think that a truly existent arising exists, and ultimately think that it will cease and be annihilated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because all phenomena arise from conditions. Where does it originate from in the beginning? And ultimately, there is no cessation, not seeing the meaning of being free from coming and going. If you see the meaning of arising from conditions, there will be no annihilation either. Like this, if you see the meaning of cause and effect, dependent origination, you will understand that all phenomena are emptiness, not established by their own nature, and the two keys of cause and effect, dependent origination, are not only not contradictory to each other, but also help each other, thereby gaining firm conviction and entering into the wisdom of the inseparability of appearance and emptiness. Like this, by explaining the path that is free from the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, all wrong views can be eliminated. Therefore, when examining the Dharma nature or self-nature of all phenomena with pure wisdom, because no object of attachment can be found, there is no inherently established afflictive Dharma to be removed, and no object to be retained or cut off. Then, how to be liberated from samsara? As mentioned earlier, if samsara is established merely by delusion or ignorance, then by repeatedly hearing and thinking about the pure suchness, cutting off addition and subtraction, one can realize the determined meaning. And, one should observe with pure wisdom that is in accordance with this, and if one sees the true meaning, one can obtain liberation. Lord Maitreya said: 'Therefore, liberation is merely the exhaustion of error.' This is the end of 'The Essence of Dependent Origination' (Sanskrit: Pratītyasamutpādahṛdayakārikā), written by the venerable Nāgārjuna. This sentence is easy to understand. Therefore, they based their explanation of the essence of dependent origination on Nāgārjuna's own commentary, and without relying on Samata, they recorded their understanding of the essence of dependent origination in written form. May the merit of this excellent path by which one can gain victory, that is, the Dharma of dependent origination personally taught to others, and the faith that arises in it and the discernment through pure wisdom, until the essence of enlightenment is attained, may all be endowed with unobstructed wisdom of all knowable objects and faith in the Buddha and his teachings, and the good fortune to realize the profound and unsurpassed meaning of dependent origination. In order to repay the kindness of the benefactors and protectors, may all beings in the boundless pure lands always be liberated by the words that explain the profound dependent origination. Like this, by the power of the great virtuous wind generated by effort... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
