Although it is so, it is not a combination of three. If someone says, 'The mantra vows are not all three, because now they have completely become mantras,' then I ask you, if the Hinayana Pratimoksha is taken over by Bodhicitta, will it become Mahayana Pratimoksha? If not, then the person who holds the Pratimoksha vows will not generate mantra vows in their mindstream, because the two are different. If the abiding does not change, but they are received separately through their respective rituals, so they are not mixed, then in the mindstream of a person who has both Pratimokshas, the original two hundred and fifty precepts of the Hinayana and the newly received two hundred and fifty of the Mahayana will not be mixed. If added together, how do you explain that there are five hundred precepts in the mindstream of one person? If it transforms, does it transform after abandoning the Hinayana Pratimoksha, or does it transform without abandoning it? If it is not abandoned, then it is impossible to become Mahayana, because the Hinayana Pratimoksha has not abandoned its own nature, so the abiding has not changed. If it transforms after abandoning it, then have the original two hundred and fifty precepts also been abandoned? If not abandoned, like the first case, it is impossible to have a combination of three. If not abandoned, then has the abiding changed? Think about it. Then, what is the situation of self-characteristics not being mixed and having a combination of three? This exists. The two hundred and fifty precepts that were received according to the ritual during the Pratimoksha, have not disappeared in the upper stage, but exist in an even more excellent way than before, so what reason is there to say that it should not be called a combination of three? In the Mahayana Pratimoksha, is it necessary to guard the two hundred and fifty precepts of the Hinayana Pratimoksha even more strictly? If not, then it is unreasonable for the two to be different. If it is necessary to guard them more strictly, then in the Bodhisattva vows, there are other objects of protection that are not included in the two hundred and fifty precepts, and the latter two are components of the former. Therefore, the former does not abandon the vows of the latter, because it becomes the basis for the latter. In this way, the basic object of protection, and the differences in self and other skillful means and wisdom, make the nature of the vows themselves established in Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows. Then, is the two hundred and fifty precepts themselves belong to the Mahayana Pratimoksha or the Hinayana Pratimoksha? I ask you. For example, if the two hundred and fifty precepts of the Pratimoksha are taken over by Bodhicitta, and then the Bodhisattva vows are added on top of them, then these two hundred and fifty precepts become the vows of the Buddha's son Bodhisattva. For someone who simultaneously guards the Pratimoksha and Bodhisattva vows, is it correct to say that there are only Bodhisattva vows and no Pratimoksha vows? Think about it. Adding mantra on top of this is also the same. Here, we only talk about the nature of the vows of the object of protection itself, and we do not say that the means or mind that changes it are different. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8-4-4b

Therefore, what is to be protected (བསྲུང་བྱ་, bsrung bya) is not merely the essence of the previous vows (སྡོམ་པའི་ངོ་བོ་, sdom pa'i ngo bo), but exists in an accumulative manner, ensuring that the previous vows are not diminished. In this way, the rituals (ཆོ་ག་, cho ga) and the number of things to be protected, etc., are distinct in Pratimoksha (སོ་ཐར།, so thar), Bodhisattva (བྱང་སེམས།, byang sems), and Mantra (སྔགས།, sngags) vows, each in their respective contexts. And these exist not merely as Mantra alone, but are complete from the perspective of the path of fully protecting themselves. Their respective antidotes do not mix. For an individual, guarding this is the discipline of Pratimoksha, this is Mantra, and so on, can be counted. Therefore, one is a Trisamaya-vajradhara Even so, the latter two are not independent, but have been transformed into the former. Now, the second view holds that the three other vows are distinct, and they believe that this is not a statement with profound meaning, but is self-contained. They cite two examples from statements with profound meaning, namely the sun, moon, and stars, and a water vessel with a jewel, to repeat their point. But this is merely the statement of a wise person (མཁས་པའི་, mkhas pa'i) in a specific context, and is not the ultimate profound meaning of these examples, because this reasoning is detrimental. That is, if the Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Mantra vows, the lower vows never transform into the upper vows, but always remain independent, then for those who simultaneously hold the Pratimoksha vows of both the Great and Small Vehicles, it must be admitted that their continuum has both protection for their own benefit and vows for the benefit of others. Similarly, Pratimoksha itself has no ability to transform or act as a path apart from abandonment, so the Buddha (རྒྱལ་བས།, rgyal bas) spoke in this way in specific contexts. Therefore, if one is liberating the ten realms (ཞིང་བཅུ་, zhing bcu), and there is only one liberator, then when Pratimoksha itself exists, in the context of Pratimoksha, would there be a special indication of the ten realms to be liberated, and the differences in the methods of liberation? If a non-mantrika Pratimoksha practitioner were to liberate all ten realms, would they incur a root downfall (རྩ་ལྟུང་, rtsa ltung)? Is drinking alcohol and engaging in sexual activity allowed? Or, if a Trisamaya-vajradhara engages in sexual activity, is the one guarding the Pratimoksha vow there to guard it, or is the one guarding the Mantra vow engaging in sexual activity? Since it is clear as deities in union, is it necessary to explain that the upper vows overwhelm the lower vows? Pratimoksha itself has not become better or worse, because it exists in its own continuum, so in the Vinaya of Pratimoksha, is it specifically indicated that one can manifest as a deity and engage in sexual activity? If this is only the language of Mantra and not of Pratimoksha, then if one needs to guard Pratimoksha, one should do so according to one's own tenets, why talk about sexual activity and liberation? If you also think that Pratimoksha needs to be guarded, and that's why you say so, it's not the same. Because even though we guard the vows, what is to be guarded is already complete. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
