This is 'Establishing the Three Vows as One Essence'. Here, some say that the three vows are different. They cling only to their own views, without understanding the key points, and say a lot of nonsense, thinking that it is unreasonable for you Nyingma to assert that the essence of the three vows transforms. If it is reasonable, then when the Pratimoksha, etc., transforms into Mantra, འོག་མ་འོག་མ་བཏང་ནས་འགྱུར་རམ་མ་བཏང་ནས་འགྱུར། does it transform by abandoning the lower and lower, or does it transform without abandoning? If it is like the first case, then the one who holds the Vajra with the three is unreasonable. The one who holds the Vajra with the three, གསུམ་ལྡན་མ་ཡིན་པར་ཐལ། should be without the three, སོ་ཐར་བཏང་ཟིན་པའི་ཕྱིར། because the Pratimoksha has already been abandoned. The Pratimoksha has already been abandoned, བཏང་ནས་སྔགས་སུ་གནས་འགྱུར་བས་སོ་ཟེར་ཞིང་། because it is said that it transforms into Mantra after being abandoned. If it is like the second case, the Pratimoksha without abandoning its own essence 8-4-1b འགྱུར་མི་སྲིད་དེ་སོ་ཐར་སྡོམ་པ་ཆོས་ཅན། cannot transform, the Pratimoksha vow, ངོ་བོ་གནས་མ་འགྱུར་བར་ཐལ། should be that the essence does not transform, རང་གི་ངོ་བོ་མ་བཏང་བས་སོ། ། because it does not abandon its own essence. If it does not abandon its own essence, then it is impossible to transform into something else. They say this, boasting that it is a great reason, and then raise their voices in praise. Even if it is written down. Here, if I explain according to my own understanding of wisdom and experience, it should be like this. It will be explained with three reasons. Among them, establishing one's own system, ངེས་བཟུང་གི་འགལ་ཟླ་དགག་པ། refuting the opposite of fixed grasping, མཐར་ཐུག་ཤིང་རྟ་ཆེན་པོ་དག་གི་དགོངས་པ་གཅིག་ཏུ་བསྒྲུབ་པ་དང་གསུམ་ལས། and ultimately accomplishing the intention of the great chariots as one, there are these three. In the first point, there is also the actual and the refutation. First, according to the view of the omniscient father and son of Ngagi Wangpo, སྡོམ་གསུམ་ངོ་བོ་གནས་འགྱུར། the essence of the three vows transforms, རང་ལྡོག་མ་འདྲེས་པ་འདི་འདོད་དོ། ། we assert this view that self and reverse are not mixed. This is not my own creation, but from the intention of the Victorious Ones. As the quote from the Tantra of the Accomplishment of Suchness Wisdom in the Five Hundred Thousand Verses says: རྡོ་ཡི་རིགས་ཀྱི་བྱེ་བྲག་ཅིག ། 'A distinction in the types of stones, བཞུ་བས་ལྕགས་དང་ཟངས་དངུལ་འབྱུང་། ། melting produces iron, copper, and silver. By the substance of the elixir that turns things to gold, ཀུན་ཀྱང་གསེར་དུ་སྒྱུར་བར་བྱེད། ། everything is transformed into gold. Likewise, by the distinction of mind, རིགས་ཅན་གསུམ་གྱི་སྡོམ་པ་ཡང་། ། the vows of the three types of individuals, དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ཆེན་པོ་འདིར་ཞུགས་ entering into this great mandala, 8-4-2a ན། །རྡོ་རྗེ་འཛིན་པ་ཞེས་བྱའོ། ། are called Vajradhara.' ཞེས་གསུངས་པས་སོ། ། Thus it is said. Second, the refutation of that is: Your debate about whether to abandon or not is like knowing the tip but not knowing the root, མདའ་འགེངས་ཤེས་ཀྱང་འཕེན་ས་མ་ཤེས་པ་དང་འདྲ་སྟེ། or like knowing how to draw a bow but not knowing where to shoot. Although the mind is sharp, the scope is small. Not being biased towards one's own side, but from a fair standpoint, it appears like this: The so-called three vows, in general, are the same in the essence of what is to be protected in the key point of not being bound by afflictions. Because all the Buddha's teachings cut off the root of existence, མྱང་འདས་སྒྲུབ་པར་མཐུན་ཕྱིར། and are in accordance with accomplishing Nirvana. བྱམས་པས། Maitreya said: ཁམས་གསུམ་ཀུན་ནས་ཉོན་མོངས་སྤོང་བྱེད་གསུང་། 'The speech that abandons afflictions from all three realms.' And so on, explaining the reason for the power of reality.

If it can be achieved through other means, then it must be understood that it has no unchanging self-nature, and is not constant, stable, and real. Therefore, the three, the Śrāvakavinaya (Hearer's Discipline), the Bodhisattva vows, and the Mantra vows, all take abandonment and transformation as the path, and are consistent in the key point of not being bound by afflictions. For example, like not eating poison, or eating poison through a vidyā-mantra (knowledge-mantra), or transforming poison into medicine. These three are not harmed by poison. The latter two cases are like not actually eating poison. According to the height and lowness of the vehicle, the precepts to be protected, their self-nature is what is relied upon before and after. If there is no different substance, then what is there to abandon or not abandon? If you think that the state has not changed, it is because the Śrāvakavinaya is the basis of the Bodhisattva vows, and when it is held by Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment), it is called that vow. For example, when a sword is held by a coward, a warrior, and a very brave person, it is called a coward's sword, etc. It is like the sword that was previously a coward's sword is no longer so, but is now a warrior's sword. Therefore, like a sword, if you say that the self-nature of the vows has not changed, that is not true, because the function of that sword is different and greater. If there is greatness and smallness, but no change, it is like a poor person becoming rich, but having no wealth at that time; or a person becoming a minister from a commoner, and then becoming a king, but not having the corresponding actions. Therefore, whatever precepts of taking and abandoning are the self-nature of the vows. Like this, the Śrāvakavinaya is seeing the three realms of samsara (cyclic existence) as suffering, and with the mind of definitely escaping from it, abandoning the cause of suffering—afflictions—and nothing else can be taken as the path, just as an ordinary person does not have a vidyā-mantra and cannot eat poison. The Bodhisattva vows are not only for oneself to attain liberation, but also to enter with a pure intention to benefit others, and to act completely under the power of benefiting, so even the transgressions of the Śrāvakavinaya are not faulty because of the purity of intention, like a vidyā-mantra that can transform poison into medicine. Mantra is, with the great intention of quickly accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others, to gather all phenomena of appearance and existence into deity, mantra, and dharmata (the nature of reality). It is held by special skillful means and wisdom, like eating poison and relying on it to eliminate the poison. Like this, from the perspective of intention, the self-nature of the vows can only be that vow, and cannot be established otherwise. If you think they are different, then you must think that the Śrāvakavinaya, the Bodhisattva vows, and the Mantra vows cannot exist in the same person, because these three are not the same person. If the state has changed like this, then the qualities will increase. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
