When associated with pride, pride makes it afflicted. The way doubt makes it afflicted is: when one enters into samadhi on any of those eight, due to ignorance of the path and non-path, doubt arises, thinking, "Are these paths to liberation?" When the continuum of that samadhi becomes associated with doubt, doubt makes it afflicted. The way view makes it afflicted is: while possessing the first three views in one's continuum, one obtains any of the eight fundamental pure grounds of the four dhyanas and four formless realms, and upon entering into samadhi on that, the thought arises that obtaining such a samadhi is the supreme view. Because of this, the view of holding the first three views as supreme arises. When the continuum of those samadhis becomes associated with view, view makes them afflicted. Regarding the four ways of making samadhi afflicted, such as being predominantly attached, both the Sun-under Vaibhashikas and the Koshikas agree. The Kashmir Vaibhashikas believe that only being predominantly attached is the case. What is the fundamental pure ground of samadhi? It refers to the first dhyana and the formless realm's fundamental samadhi that has become a worldly virtue. The reason for calling it pure ground is that it is associated with the root of virtue that opposes attachment, or because the inherent entanglement of attachment has not manifested, it is called pure or completely liberated. If one divides it, there are the declining-part pure ground, the abiding-part pure ground, the superior-part pure ground, and the decisive-part pure ground. All seven fundamental grounds except the peak of existence possess these four, while the peak of existence possesses three except for the superior-part. So, what are these four? The declining-part pure ground is: after the fundamental pure ground of samadhi, afflictions arise subsequently, corresponding to it. The second is: it refers to that which, after it, does not give rise to afflicted samadhi, but gives rise to the pure ground of its own level, corresponding to it. The third is: it refers to that which, after it, does not give rise to it, but gives rise to the pure ground of the higher level, corresponding to it. The fourth is: it refers to that which, after it, does not give rise to it, but

It is the equanimity that accords with the arising of the uncontaminated. What is uncontaminated equanimity? It refers to the equanimity of meditative concentration and the formless absorptions, which arises as the nature of the path that transcends the world. Among these, there is the uncontaminated path that arises as the nature of the six meditative concentrations and the first three formless absorptions, but there is no uncontaminated path that arises as the nature of the peak of existence and the desire realm. This is because the activity of consciousness at the peak of existence is extremely unclear, while the desire realm becomes the nature of distraction. The fourth is the explanation of the limbs of meditative concentration, the objects of the formless absorptions, and the results of meditating on these. The first part includes the difference between substance and characteristics, the identification of each limb, and the reason for the fixed number, these three points. The first point, distinguishing from the perspective of names, there are eighteen in total, that is, the first and third meditative concentrations each have five limbs, and the second and fourth each have four. What are these limbs? The limbs of the first meditative concentration are: two of investigation and analysis, two of joy and happiness, and concentration, a total of five. The four limbs of the second meditative concentration are: conviction, joy and happiness, and concentration. The five limbs of the third meditative concentration are: mindfulness and awareness, equanimity of action, pleasant feeling, and concentration. The four limbs of the fourth meditative concentration are: pure mindfulness, pure equanimity, neutral feeling, and concentration. If these limbs are summarized as substances, according to the Abhidharmakośa's view, they can be summarized as eleven substances: two of investigation and analysis, joy, extreme pliancy bliss, concentration, conviction, mindfulness, awareness, equanimity of action, mental pleasure feeling, neutral feeling, a total of eleven. The way of summarizing is: the two joys of the first and second meditative concentrations are summarized as the substance of joy, the two happinesses of the first and second are summarized as the substance of extreme pliancy bliss, concentration is summarized as the substance of concentration, the mindfulness of the latter two concentrations is summarized as the substance of mindfulness, and the two equanimities of action of the latter two concentrations are summarized as the substance of equanimity of action. The view of the Compendium of Determinations considers it to be nine substances: two of investigation and analysis, mental pleasure feeling, concentration, equanimity of action, mindfulness, awareness, mental happiness feeling, neutral feeling, a total of nine. The way of summarizing is: the joy and happiness of the first and second meditative concentrations are summarized as mental pleasure feeling.
