Like a mother's mindfulness, the three of equanimity regarding formations are branches of the antidote, namely abandoning the joy of the second [dhyana]. The others are as before. The mindfulness of the fourth [dhyana] is completely pure. The complete purity of equanimity regarding formations is a branch of the antidote, because it abandons the bliss of the third [dhyana]. Equanimity of feeling is a branch of benefit. Samadhi is a branch of location. What is the difference between the branches of dhyana? Answer: In the branches of the first two, there is a difference in whether samadhi is complete or not. In the branches of the latter two, there is a difference in whether benefiting is complete or not. What is the reason for establishing the four dhyanas? Answer: They are established as four by making the sense faculty of feeling necessarily arise. That is, the first is established by making the sense faculty of unpleasant feeling necessarily arise. The second is established by making the sense faculty of painful feeling necessarily arise. The third is established by making the sense faculty of pleasant feeling necessarily arise. The fourth dhyana is established by making the sense faculty of blissful feeling necessarily arise. This is explained in the Compendium of Ascertainments. Thus, the joy and bliss of the first dhyana are called joy and bliss born of detachment. The joy and bliss of the second are called joy and bliss born of samadhi. The bliss of the third is called bliss without joy. Thus, the second dhyana is [established] because the first dhyana abandons discursive thought. The third dhyana is [established] because the second abandons joy. The fourth is established because the third abandons bliss. Therefore, it is said that the dhyanas surpass the lower grounds through the door of the branches. When examining the objects of the formless [realms], there are four. Among them, the object of infinite space is: The individual who has attained the fourth dhyana sees form as coarse, and in order to reverse that, the fourth dhyana is coarse and infinite space is peaceful, and these are only space. Thus, when one has become familiar with peace and coarseness for a long time, the perception of form, which appears as blue, yellow, etc., the perception of obstruction, which appears as walls and bricks, etc., and the perception of variety, which appears as gardens and rivers, etc., all disappear, and one enters into absorption by focusing on only the four aggregates of coarse name and space.

This is the attainment of the sphere of infinite space. The object aspect of the sphere of infinite space is: A person who has attained the samadhi of the sphere of infinite space sees the perception of the sphere of infinite space as coarse, and in order to prevent it, because of long-term familiarity with the fact that infinite space is coarse and the sphere of infinite consciousness is peaceful, the perception of infinite space is prevented, and the perception of the four aggregates of names in one's own realm is the samadhi of the sphere of infinite consciousness. The object aspect of the sphere of nothingness is: A person who has attained the samadhi of the sphere of infinite consciousness sees the perception of the sphere of infinite consciousness as coarse, and in order to prevent it, because of long-term familiarity with the fact that the sphere of infinite consciousness is coarse and the sphere of nothingness is peaceful, the perception of the sphere of infinite consciousness is prevented, and there is nothing that is the object of form and formlessness. The samadhi that focuses on the coarse four aggregates of names is the samadhi of the sphere of nothingness. The object aspect of the samadhi of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is: A person who has attained the samadhi of the sphere of nothingness sees the thought of nothingness as coarse, and in order to prevent it, the complete absence of thought is complete ignorance. Coarse thought is disease, tumor, pain, coarse thought exists neither, subtle thought does not exist either, it is peaceful, excellent, and definitely arises, because of long-term familiarity with peace and coarseness, coarse thought exists neither, subtle thought does not exist either, the samadhi that focuses on the four aggregates of names in one's own realm is the samadhi of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. In this way, because the sphere of infinite space is abandoned, there is the sphere of infinite consciousness, relying on abandoning it, there is the sphere of nothingness, and relying on abandoning it, it is established as the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, therefore it is called transcendence of the lower ground through the gateway of focusing on the formless. These are the fruits of cultivation.

The explanation is: What are the meditative states of rebirth and the formless states of rebirth? By cultivating the meditative absorptions of dhyana as small, medium, and large, three by three, the three rebirths of the four dhyanas are accomplished. That is to say, the essence of these dhyanas, the innate part of the world, is mostly the ripening fruit of the meditative absorption of dhyana, and the container worlds of these are their arising fruit, so they are the meditative states of rebirth. Similarly, for the formless absorptions, by cultivating small, medium, and large, three by three, the rebirth of the formless is accomplished. For the sentient beings born there, most of their innate part is the ripening fruit of the formless absorption, so it is the formless state of rebirth. The meaning of small, medium, and large is that if one does not have both respectful practice and constant practice, it is small; if one has either one, it is medium; if one has both, it is large. The individual who is the basis of the one who has attained is that the seven others besides the sphere of nothingness are the basis of both their own ground and the lower ground; and the sphere of nothingness has the basis of its own ground, the lower ground, and the upper ground. The explanation of the signs of attainment is that the sign of attaining the absorption of the dhyanas is a sign like the body appearing to sink into the ground. The sign of attaining the absorption of the formless is that the body appears to fly in the sky, as explained in the place of hearing. Composed by the glorious Losang Drakpa. May this lotus garden of the victorious teachings be filled with the fragrance of benefit and happiness; may the flowers of explanation and practice bloom, filled with the essence of the nectar of liberation; for the benefit of all beings, the continent of the four births and the ten virtues; may this rain of Dharma spread from the great Dharma continent.
