If it arises as which identity, fundamental or proximate? Regarding this, according to the Abhidharmasamuccaya, the liberation path that is free from the ninth defilement of the lower realm pervades arising as the fundamental identity of the upper realm. According to the Abhidharmakośa, the liberation path that is free from the ninth defilement of the desire realm, and the liberation path that is free from the ninth defilement of the first dhyāna, and the liberation paths that are free from the ninth defilement of the second and third dhyānas, these nine liberation paths have various possibilities of arising as the identity of fundamental and proximate. From the fourth dhyāna onwards up to the peak of existence, the nine liberation paths that are free from the ninth defilement to be abandoned by meditation of their own lower realm all pervade arising as their fundamental identity. The reason why the Abhidharmakośa holds this view is that, in general, the feeling of the proximate is made to pervade by equanimity. The fundamental feeling of the first and second dhyānas is mental pleasure. The fundamental feeling of the third dhyāna is the feeling of mental happiness. Therefore, since the sense faculties of feeling are of different kinds, it is difficult to transfer the faculties, so it is established in this way. The fundamental feeling of the fourth dhyāna and above is pervaded by equanimity, so since there are no different kinds of sense faculties of feeling, it is easy to transfer the faculties, so it is established in this way. Thus, the nine uninterrupted paths that abandon the nine defilements to be cultivated of the lower realm and the first eight liberation paths of it are all pervaded by the proximate. The remainder is taught to be similar to this, just as it is explained for the proximate of the first dhyāna, so it should be done similarly for the proximate of the second dhyāna up to the peak of existence. The difference that is not the same is that if these eight proximates are meditated upon based on the support of the desire realm, then the first attention has a meditation mixed with hearing and thinking, but if meditated upon based on the support of the form realm, then there is no arising from thinking. If based on the support of the formless realm, then there is also no arising from hearing, but it is innate. The attention that gathers the joy of the first two dhyānas has the feeling of joy and happiness. The attention that gathers the joy of the third dhyāna has the feeling of happiness, and the attention that gathers the joy of the fourth dhyāna and above is merely said to see the abandonment of what is to be abandoned as a quality, and there is no feeling of joy and happiness gathered by its own ground. It should be known that the first attention of any proximate belongs to the lower realm. Tranquility and coarseness

The method of abandoning the afflictions of the lower realms through the approximations (nyer-sdogs) that possess [certain qualities]: According to the Vaibhashikas, the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and those to be abandoned by meditation in the lower realms are all-pervasive in being abandoned together. According to the Sautrantikas, they assert that only the afflictions to be abandoned by meditation in the lower realms are abandoned. Moreover, even the coarse afflictions to be abandoned by meditation in the lower realms are not all-pervasive in being completely abandoned, such as the defiled minds of ordinary beings who have attained the actual basis of the first dhyana and rely on desire. The remaining realms should also be understood in the same way. Thus, among the eight approximations, the approximation of the first dhyana has two: pure and uncontaminated. However, some say that there are three, including those with taste. The remaining five approximations from the second dhyana upwards are all-pervasive with the pure. Regarding the nature of what is to be attained, there are the defiled, the actually pure, and the analysis of their distinctions. The first has three: What is the basis to be defiled? What dharma defiles? How does it defile? The first is: the four pure actual bases of the four dhyanas, and the four pure actual bases of the four formless realms, making eight. The uncontaminated is not a basis to be defiled, because it cannot defile. What are the four dharmas that defile? Desire, pride, doubt, and views of the upper realms. Anger is not a dharma that defiles, because there is no anger in the basis of the upper realms. If asked, what is the dharma that completely defiles through ignorance? How does it defile? It defiles doubt through the power of ignorance, so it is said that ignorance and doubt are of the same kind. How does it defile? How does desire defile? If one enters into samadhi on any of the eight pure actual bases of the four dhyanas and the formless realms, then craving arises that focuses on those samadhis. When the continuum of samadhi is associated with craving, it defiles because craving is stronger. How does pride defile? If one enters into samadhi on any of those eight, then the thought arises, "I have attained such a samadhi, but others have not," and a sense of pride arises. The continuum of those samadhis, I
