Thus it is said. In its commentary, it says: 'Not abandoning afflictions, not making effort to abandon them, in order to obtain other fruits, that should not be called entering the stream.' If it is said conversely, at the time of diligent practice, then it is entering the stream. Thus it is said, meaning that if one does not diligently practice to abandon the fruit of entering the stream, then one does not enter a higher fruit, nor does one abide in a superior fruit. Such a mere abiding in the fruit, not yet abandoning what is to be abandoned by cultivation, accumulating the karma of definitely experiencing seven existences in the life of an ordinary being, is called a 'seven-time existence,' and such a person is certain to take birth seven times. In the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: 'If one attains the highest, there are other seven-time existences, but they are not certain, so they are not mentioned.' The fruit of cultivation is not yet abandoned, if one wishes to attain, it is seven-time existence. In the context of the seven-time existence mentioned, this seven-time existence is mentioned because it is certain to take birth seven times, although there are other seven-time existences if one wishes to attain, but they are not mentioned here because it is not certain whether they will take birth seven times, so it is not shown here. Why is the eighth existence not manifestly accomplished? Because during that time, life is not consumed by obstacles, and the continuum is completely matured. That path is like that, like being bitten by a snake for seven steps, or like having a fever for four days. In the commentary, it says: 'For example, if one is bitten by something called a snake biting seven steps, one will lose seven steps and die. It is not possible afterwards, nor is it possible before.' Because one is born between seven lives, it is called seven-time existence. Not all, so it is said that if one wishes to attain, it refers to the worst of all. Because the fruit of cultivation is not yet abandoned, it is said that the seven-time existence indicated by it is the worst of the seven-time existences who take birth seven times. In that case, the three distinctions mentioned earlier of abiding in the fruit, not yet abandoning what is to be abandoned by cultivation, and accumulating the karma of definitely experiencing seven existences in the life of an ordinary being, only these three are certain to take birth seven times. Other fruits of entering the stream, if one wishes to attain, are also seven-time existences, but considering that it is not certain whether they will take birth seven times, those who wander up and down, it can be considered that they may pass into nirvana in the meantime. Until the ultimate end of Akanishta and the peak of existence.

Because cyclic existence itself is such that there is no further going, for example, a stream enterer, if he reaches the peak, is like a seven-times returner. And in its commentary it also says, for example, a stream enterer, if he reaches the peak, is just like a seven-times returner, although it is not impossible that after manifesting two or three lives after that, he will attain nirvana, but because after that he will not manifest an eighth life, he is called a seven-times returner who has reached the peak. That is what is said. If it is done like that, then there is not even a little contradiction between what was said above that one must definitely take seven times, and what was shown below that taking is not definite. If one reaches the peak, being called a seven-times returner, it is clear that this is not definite only for noble ones, because the commentary says that there are other seven-times returners. 'Other' means that the continuum of an ordinary being is completely ripened. 'Not definite' means that if this person attains nirvana in this very life or in the intermediate state and so on, then it is not mentioned here. Therefore, there are two kinds of seven-times returners if an ordinary person reaches the peak, and a noble stream enterer seven-times returner, the former being practitioners on the path of joining, who, whether quickly or slowly, will definitely attain nirvana without manifesting an eighth life, and the latter, as mentioned above, has two kinds, definite and indefinite. Here, some people make the basis of distinction the fruit position and what is to be abandoned by cultivation, and then take one or two births and so on for that, and there is also one who reaches the peak and is a seven-times returner, and they say that the former are indefinite and the latter are definitely seven-times returners, and they make the second line a part of the distinction, and they think that they have thoroughly understood the intention of the text, but this only makes those who know the words happy, but not those who know the meaning, because the three kinds of seven-times returners who abide in the fruit and have not abandoned what is to be abandoned by cultivation refer to the same person. Likewise, in the commentary it says that whoever abides in the fruit and has not abandoned the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation is a stream enterer, and because he is born between seven lives, he is a seven-times returner. And in summarizing the meaning, it also says that for the time being, whoever has not abandoned what is to be abandoned by cultivation through meditation, reaching the peak is a seven-times returner, that is how it is. Because of that. And others think that taking two or three lives...
