If one does not strive to abandon what should be abandoned, one will not enter (the path), so it is necessary to continuously practice abandoning what should be abandoned, and this can only be achieved on a single seat, because there is no certainty in other situations. Although others have not studied this meaning, at least I understand that this is reasonable. In this way, it is impossible for both methods to be reasonable, because the basis to be studied—the entering of the stream (Srotāpanna)—promises two inconsistencies on the basis of just one. If neither is reasonable, then what should be considered the definite meaning? Because it would become the fault mentioned earlier, the first aspect is not accepted. In this way, only the method of the Abhidharmasamuccaya is without flaws. Because the Paṇḍitas of the Vaibhāṣika school, arbitrarily think about the meaning of the sutras with biased thinking, considering those (contents) to be the meaning of the sutras, and classify most of the ways in which the three vehicles of individuals generate realization in the continuum, etc. The Second Buddha (Asaṅga) has correctly pointed out the harm of reasoning and prevented saying that it is the meaning of the sutras, and moreover, the teacher Asaṅga was personally prophesied by the Tathāgata to be the supreme master of expounding the meaning of the sutras. If the Vaibhāṣikas have a completely pure sutra basis, saying that all initial stream-enterers abide in the path of seeing, there is no harm, because it can be inferred that it refers to the majority or the stream-enterers of the noble ones. Those who say that the method of the Abhidharmasamuccaya is that of the Sautrāntika school do not understand at all. Moreover, the method of the Sautrāntika school is adopted by the teacher (Asaṅga), pointing out the harm of the fifteen moments of the path of seeing, and the initial stream-enterer is a noble one, if so, then wanting to

Understanding leads to two types of followers: those who follow by faith and those who follow by dharma. As stated in the Compendium, "What is a follower by faith? It is one who accumulates merit, whose faculties are dull, who follows the teachings of others, and who practices in order to realize the truth directly. What is a follower by dharma? It is one who accumulates merit, whose faculties are sharp, who relies on the dharma of truth himself, and who practices in order to realize the truth directly." Also, in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, it is said, "If those followers by faith and dharma, having previously cultivated with a worldly path, have not abandoned what should be abandoned and are still bound by all fetters, then these two are called those who have entered the stream-entry fruition. If, having previously cultivated with a worldly path, they have abandoned up to five aspects of the practices to be abandoned in the desire realm, they are likewise called those who have entered the first fruition." The meaning of followers by faith and followers by dharma is explained as before, based on whether the previous understanding of the scriptures relied on others or not. Without abandoning the sixth affliction of desire, from a single session of the path of application, abiding in the subsequent endurance of the path, this is called entering the stream. This is a summary verse. The path to stream-entry fruition has been explained. What is it to abide in the stream-entry fruition? It is the Hinayana practitioner who has not abandoned the six afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm and abides in the sixteen aspects of the path of seeing. This is based on the gradual abandonment of what is to be abandoned; the sudden abandonment will be discussed below. Here, there are two types: abiding in just the fruition of stream-entry and abiding in a special fruition. Among them, one who abides in the stream-entry fruition is one who has not abandoned the stable afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm and does not strive in the practice of abandoning them now, or one who has abandoned any of the one to five afflictions but does not strive in the practice of abandoning them now, and thus becomes merely one who abides in the stream-entry fruition. As it is said in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, "Abiding in the fruition, as long as one does not strive to attain another fruition in order to make it special, one is not called one who has entered the stream; the same applies to other fruitions as well."
