Because wise individuals must act in accordance with the capacity of the beings to be tamed, just as the actions of the Buddha. The sutra connection is: How does the great bodhisattva who practices prajna become familiar with and abide in the three liberations and the thirty-seven dharmas? This is the answer to the question. The second part has three points: the object of union, the nature of the union with an object, and their respective differences. The first point is: Sunlight and eighty pills are the three liberations, as well as the seven categories of the northern direction, etc., ten kinds, and in Lemang, the nine borderlands and powers, and non-mixture, etc., are spoken of as objects. The second point is: When a bodhisattva, in all excellent ways, individually observes emptiness, he should not think, "I should realize it," nor should he think, "It is to be realized," but he should think, "I should become completely familiar with it," and thus individually observe. The meaning is that although wisdom makes one familiar with all dharmas, compassion does not make the fruits of those dharmas for one's own benefit, so one does not abide in the two extremes. This previously explained practice of not clinging to the two extremes is the union that has an object. Not abiding in samadhi, but with compassion benefiting sentient beings. During that time, one will not completely lose the Buddha's teachings. The third point is: This skillful means of union has ten aspects. That is to say, these objects are established through different methods of practice, but their nature is not necessarily different. What are they? Starting from "transcending all enemies," etc., add "skillful means of union" at the end of each. The third part has two points: explaining in detail from each perspective, and summarizing the meaning from the perspective of object and nature. The first point is: The skillful means of transcending the enemies of death, afflictions, aggregates, the four maras, and the two grounds, by the son of the gods, etc., is: completely transcending the dharma that obstructs union. Likewise, at that time, the wise bodhisattva also generates great compassion for all sentient beings, and also transcends the four maras and the two grounds, abiding in excellent samadhi, and does not touch enlightenment. It is said that just like a person who is skilled in all arts, when going to a desolate monastery, he uses the analogy of transcending all external opponents. From Sunlight, it is said that the bodhisattva, with the sentient beings he has taken under his care, causes them to transcend obstacles. Here is the skillful means of union.

First, based on the skillful means of overcoming the four maras, a detailed study of the four maras is conducted. Here, a brief study of the four maras should be understood from three aspects: recognizing their essence, the reasons for establishing them as four, and the manner in which they are established. First, the *Śrāvakabhūmi* states: "Among them, the skandha-māra refers to the five aggregates of clinging. The kleśa-māra refers to the various afflictions that exist in the three realms. The mṛtyu-māra refers to the time of death for beings, that is, when beings die in their respective categories. The devaputra-māra refers to the sons of the gods born in the desire realm who have obtained power, who come to obstruct and distract those who are diligently striving in virtuous practices in order to be completely liberated from the skandha-māra, kleśa-māra, and mṛtyu-māra. This is called the devaputra-māra." Thus it is said. Second, why are they established as four maras? These are the four maras established with death as the focus. That is, where death occurs, in what way death occurs, what the essence of death is, and what prevents one from being liberated from death. Where the five aggregates arise and exist; afflictions lead to rebirth in the next life, and after being born, one faces death; the life force of beings ceases; and striving to be liberated from death, one is unable to be completely liberated or it takes a long time to be liberated. The *Śrāvakabhūmi* states: "Therefore, focusing on where death occurs, in what way death occurs, what death is, and what obstacles prevent one from being completely liberated from death, the four maras are established." Thus it is said. Third, the kleśa-māra disappears from the eighth bhūmi onwards; for the mṛtyu-māra, although there is no death from the first bhūmi onwards due to the power of karma and afflictions, the death and transference of the mind-made body cannot be avoided until Buddhahood is attained, therefore the mṛtyu-māra exists; the skandha-māra exists until Buddhahood is attained; and the devaputra-māra also obstructs these three, so as long as these three exist, it continues to exist. The *Uttaratantra* also states: "Having attained the state of deathlessness and peace, because the death-māra has no movement." Therefore, the Dharmakāya of the Buddha is considered proof of permanence. The habitual tendencies of these, along with everything related to them, can only be destroyed at the same time as you attain Bodhi, and then you can overcome the four maras.
