(The answer:) It implies that the action in a dream has an opposing antidote, that is, it is harmed by correct reasoning, but it exists in the ultimate sense, because the subsequent wisdom clings to the real object of the ultimate sense, so it is argued. If Subhuti himself previously nourished with subsequent wisdom, it has been shown that karma exists, why does he later argue in that way himself, is this not related? (Answer:) It is true, but because doubt arises about his own commitment, he is inspired by questioning, and if such a doubt arises, how would you answer? He asked Shariputra in this way, and showed that as his own answer. Or, in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it says: "What do you say is asking about truth and untruth, even if the side of the antidote has been understood, but because the subsequent arising of conceptual thought follows, it is argued in order to show that it is the ultimate truth." Therefore, even if Subhuti himself understood the antidote or answer to that accusation, he asked Shariputra what kind of action that was, whether it was true or not, because the previous conceptual thought had been nourished, and it was shown that there was accumulation and decrease of karma, in order to show that the connection of that cause and effect is the ultimate truth as it is. That is also because the subsequent arising of conceptual thought previously showed that there was decrease and increase of karma, in order to determine again that the connection of cause and effect that was shown to arise from convention, he asked Shariputra, and made him give an answer consistent with it. The second answer is: The venerable Subhuti said, without an object, karma does not arise, karma only arises with an object. Without an object, mind does not arise, mind only arises with an object. Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, it is just so, without an object, karma does not arise, without an object, consciousness does not arise. With an object, karma arises, not without an object. With an object, consciousness arises, not without an object. Thus it is. The meaning is, in the Sunlight Commentary, it says: Because it is promised that karma arises from karma with an object, and it is prevented that karma arises without an object, therefore again it arises from convention.

It is said, meaning that karma is created by the mind of manifest attachment, so the relationship of cause and effect is also said to come from convention. Thus, these two debates and answers cut off the doubt about the relationship of cause and effect, which was previously said to be without karma. This seems to be the view of the "Sunlight Eight Thousand Verse Commentary" and others. However, the old and new commentators did not mention this, but only debated and refuted that the Tathagata also has the fault of accumulating karma. This is because they did not distinguish between the "Eight Thousand Verses" and the "Eight Thousand Verse Commentary," and the explanation of the Sunlight Commentary was too strict. In the "Eight Thousand Verses," if one nourishes by rejoicing in later actions, then Subhuti said that good and evil in dreams, etc., have accumulation and near accumulation. Shariputra retorted that the Tathagata also accumulates karma because he has the discrimination of "my life is exhausted," which is very excessive. In response, the sutra says that the Tathagata has no discrimination or delusion, and is like the sky. The sutras of the second answer quoted earlier were also spoken by Subhuti, not by Shariputra. In the "Destroying Minor Harms," Shariputra asked, "If one discriminates after waking up, will that karma also be accumulated or reduced?" Subhuti replied, "As you say," etc., to show Shariputra the difference between the karma of dreams and daytime in the relative truth. Then, Shariputra showed the difference between the karma of dreams and daytime by showing that karma and consciousness do not arise without an object. That is to say, the karma done when not asleep has an object, and the karma done in dreams, when one rejoices after waking up, because there is no object, the power of karma is greater or lesser, so it is explained. The third argument is: The Blessed One said, "O Subhuti, all dharmas and all consciousness are peaceful." Then, how can karma arise with an object, and not arise without an object? How can consciousness arise with an object, and not arise without an object? Answer three: Subhuti said, "O Shariputra, with a sign as an object, karma arises with an object, and does not arise without an object. Consciousness arises with an object, and does not arise without an object."
