The nine grounds in between are the path of meditation, so it is taught. Mentioning the desire realm and so on is to emphasize that the ultimate mother does not exist there. Saying the nine grounds does not refer to the first three formless realms and the six dhyana grounds, totaling nine; two ways of relying on the nine grounds of the three realms are explained. At all times, these two are taken as choices, the latter being in accordance with the upper and lower Abhidharma. The former is because the peak of existence is extremely unclear, and the desire realm is extremely unpeaceful, therefore the Abhidharma prohibits the unpolluted from relying on the two. However, as the former says, Bodhisattvas, with skillful means, are not harmed by the unclearness and distraction of the peak of existence and the desire realm, so I think the former way is not unreasonable either. Generally speaking, although it is so, in this treatise, it is appropriate to explain these nine grounds as the basis for abandoning what is to be abandoned. This is the mind-basis of the path of meditation, while the body-basis, for the unborn, as the basis for birth, does not need the gods and humans of the desire realm; for the born, as the basis for abiding, noble Bodhisattvas will not be born in the formless realm, so they need the form realm as the basis; for the Shravakas, there are also those who take the formless realm as the basis. The mind-basis of the Shravakas should be done according to the latter way. Secondly, the purity of the Buddha is called the extremely pure, that is, relying on the four samapattis of the desire realm, dhyana, and formless realm, totaling nine grounds; or, the non-conducive aspects included in the three realms, the greatest of the great to be abandoned by cultivation, and through etc., the nature of the nine antidotes such as the smallest of the small, in order, the nine kinds of the Mahayana path of cultivation, such as the smallest of the small, are the cause of purifying all the defilements of what is to be abandoned by cultivation. This is pervasive, if the cause can purify all defilements, then the result must be liberated from all defilements. The purity of the Shravaka Pratyekabuddha Arhat is called the other part of the extremely pure, which is purified by all defilements, that is, the purity of a small part, that is, the nine kinds of the Shravaka Pratyekabuddha path of cultivation, small, medium, and large, which arise as antidotes to the nine grades of what is to be abandoned by cultivation, large, medium, and small, relying on the nine grounds, are the cause of purifying the other part of all kinds, only the defilements of the afflictive obscurations and the defilements of the object-grasping conceptualization related to them.
