And does not abide in the noble path between ྲེས་པའི་. The seventh is that, having strayed from the path in that way, one fixates on phenomena in a perverse manner. The eighth is from the Pramāṇavārttika: "If there is self, then there is the thought of other. From the parts of self and other, grasping and hatred arise. From these two and their connection, all faults will occur." As it says, having fixated in a perverse manner, attachment arises for the part of self, and so on, hatred for the part of other is explained, but explaining it as being about self and sentient beings, etc., is not the intention. As the Ornament of Realization says, quoting this scripture, it is because of manifest attachment to self, etc. The ninth is the suffering that arises after pure nirvāṇa, which is also a cause of weariness. And so on, it includes contaminated things that produce higher realms. It is not appropriate to explain this as the path truth that produces the cessation truth, because the object of this thought is all contaminated. In that case, the first is ignorance, the third is the view of the perishable collection, and the fourth is the extreme view, so they are the origin of suffering. The second is the origin of birth, so it is the nature of complete contamination. The remainder are the faults and natures of complete contamination, each according to its kind. The way of thinking about that object is also that these are the grasped objects of complete contamination, so one should think that they should be abandoned. These last three thoughts and the second are taught in the sutras from the point of view of the antidote. The second is: If the grasped thoughts that are the basis of the antidote of purification are divided, there are nine kinds. That is, from the point of view of thinking about the nine objects. What are the nine objects? The first is: The meaning of the aggregates is not accumulated into purification. That is because one is not skilled in means, one thinks about form and manifests attachment. One thinks about consciousness and manifests attachment. So it is said. "Belonging to purification" should also be applied to the following. The second is: The meaning of the door of birth is the sense bases. The third is: The meaning of the element is the elements. The fourth is: The meaning of birth is that dependent arising arises from what has not arisen. Here, the meaning of what is said in the sutra, "From ignorance to old age and death, one thinks and manifests attachment," is accepted as the Great Self explained the dependent arising in a reversed manner. As the Sunlight Commentary says: The divisions of aggregates, sense bases, elements, and dependent arising, etc., that belong to the part of purification.

Therefore, it is said that it will transform into nine forms. The fifth is the meaning of emptiness (śūnyatā). As stated in the Root Verses on the Middle Way (Mūlamadhyamakakārikā): "The emptiness of the Buddhas, definitely refutes all views." Therefore, merely viewing it as a negation is not suitable as an antidote to clinging. Thus, for whatever is the object of focus, the profound emptiness that uproots those clingings and is free from elaboration. What is the meaning of emptiness? Why is it called emptiness? Because all afflictions no longer flow. It is like that. The sixth is the meaning of going to the other shore (pāramitā). Merely the non-existence of things does not accomplish the perfection of the two benefits of going to the other shore, therefore it is what causes one to go to the other shore. The seventh is the path of seeing (darśanamārga) of the sixteen moments of knowledge and acceptance, which has the ability to connect with what is to be abandoned by the path of seeing. The eighth is the meditative absorption (dhyāna) that transcends the lower realms through the aspects of limbs and objects, and the nature of the formless realms, which is the path of meditation (bhāvanāmārga). The ninth is the state of no more learning (aśaikṣa) where the training is completely perfected. These are also the objects of purification, and the conditions, causes, dependent arising, as well as the objects of focus, conduct, and divisions, namely the first six and the last three, in that order. The way of clinging to these is to think, "This is an object to be taken up by purification, therefore it should be accepted." These nine are explained from the perspective of their essence in the Sutra Pitaka, except for the fourth. The second part has two aspects: a detailed explanation of clinging to substance and a detailed explanation of clinging to imputation. The first part is: the person (pudgala), that is, the one who clings, the clinging conceptualization that is substantially existent and dependent, can be divided into nine types. That is, either from the perspective of conceptualizing the object, or from the perspective of having nine ways of clinging that possess an object. What are the nine ways of clinging? The first is: self (ātman), that is, the clinger to the object, clinging to it as an independent entity that does not rely on others. The self is not perceived as being near, similarly, sentient beings, life, nourishment, individuals, persons, beings, mind-born, agents, experiencers, knowers, and seers are not perceived as being near. Why is that? Because it is extremely pure, selfless and not perceived as being near. It is like that. The root meaning of "self" should also be understood for the following. The second is: self, the incomparable unique one. The third is: self, the cause that opens the door of consciousness. The fourth is: self, from the seer to the knower.
