As it is said that generating the intention is like that, therefore, individual liberation is needed as a basis, and it is not necessary to abandon all inabilities. The basis of mind is: faith in the Victorious One, compassion for sentient beings, and hearing the benefits of the Bodhisattva, these three. As the Jewel Lamp Sutra says: "Having faith in the Buddhas and the Dharma of the Buddhas, Having faith in the conduct of the Buddha's sons, Having faith in the unsurpassed Bodhi, The minds of great beings arise." Also, as the Ornament says: "Its root is considered compassion." Like that. Second, there are three: the basis, the definition, and the classification. First, there are two: other teachers, and the system of the commentators of this treatise. First, in the Bodhisattva Grounds, it says, "The supreme aspiration of the Bodhisattvas is the generation of the mind." Therefore, according to Asanga, aspiration is considered the nature of the generation of the mind. In the Ornament Commentary, it says, "The thought that possesses the three qualities and is focused on the two is called the generation of the mind," which is the thought of the Bodhisattva. Because it appears in the commentary, Vasubandhu considers thought to be the nature. In the Ornament, it says, "The aspiration of those who are steadfast is thought accompanied by desire." Because thought accompanied by the desire of friends is said to be aspiration, it seems that the brothers' views are the same. Second, there are two: the noble one and his followers, and the views that do not agree with that. First, the noble one says, "The so-called generation of the mind, mind is consciousness, that is, discernment. What is discernment? It is the discernment of the mind, because it focuses on all white dharmas, therefore it exists in that. The so-called generation means to know that what has not been generated is generated, therefore, the dharma known by the mind is for the purpose of showing the object of the initial boundary." After explaining the meaning of mind and generation, considering that the five sense consciousnesses are only looking outward, and that the alaya consciousness and afflicted mind are unspecified, they are not placed on them, but the discernment of the mind, which is suitable as the basis of all white dharmas, is explained as the basis. Furthermore, regarding the explanation of the desire for enlightenment as the generation of the mind, a debate is presented, and it is said that desire is only nominally attributed to the generation of the mind, but it is not real.

In the commentary on the Twenty Thousand Verses, the same basis of name is adopted. This teacher also cites the debates and responses in both the Ornament of Realization and this one regarding the appearance of the Twenty Thousand Verses, and explains that attributing intention to the mind is the nature of the mind. Abhayakara also lists the debates and responses regarding the Buddha's intention. In Moonlight, consciousness is taken as the basis of the name. The Clear Words says: "Regarding what is called bodhicitta, here, some mainly explain the actual bodhicitta, which is desire, etc. Some attribute it to the companions that increase bodhicitta, such as generosity. Some attribute it to the result, such as the one path of approach." This explanation, although following the teacher's view, is somewhat rough. The second view is that Buddhashri believes that the pursuit of meaning itself is the nature of omniscience, and therefore it is so called, otherwise, if the cause is called the result, and the companion is called the name associated with it, how can its own definition be accomplished? He refutes the views of the noble ones and teachers, and believes that the desire to pursue meaning itself is the mind, and therefore believes that mind and mental factors are the same entity. Shantipa believes that both mind and desire are bodhicitta. In the Pure Possession it says: "Regarding what is called the object of bodhicitta, mind is mind and desire." And it says: "Thus, the desire to aim at perfect and complete enlightenment for the sake of others is the definition of bodhicitta." So, what meaning do the noble ones and teachers see in what they consider to be the mind? They believe that if mental factors are bodhicitta, then the meaning of the word bodhicitta cannot be established, and therefore they think so. In particular, the teacher, in the Ornament of the Sutras, when explaining the definition of bodhicitta, says: "Great joy and great effort, great meaning and great arising, the mind of the bodhisattva is the mind, the arising of mental factors with two meanings." He thinks that the last line explains the mind as the mind. In the Ornament of Realization, this passage is quoted during the debate, and it is said: "Is not the mind that arises in the appearance of a special object of mind, which is in accordance with the mind, bodhicitta?" Therefore, he thinks that this quotation shows that the mind with the mind as a companion is shown as bodhicitta.
