Homage! Among them, the greatest joy is not being weary of practicing austerities for a long time with armor-like diligence. The greatest endeavor is to accomplish the armor as it is with the diligence of application. The greatest meaning is for the benefit of oneself and others. The greatest arising is the accomplishment of great Bodhi. That is to say, the first two sentences explain the behavior of the individual, and the latter two explain the meaning of the behavior, and the merit of completely grasping the fruit. Both of these are aimed at Bodhi and benefiting others. The second is the mind that arises in accordance with the desire for perfect Bodhi for the sake of others. The third has four points: distinguishing from the perspective of nature, mode of arising, boundaries, and tenets. The first is the two minds of aspiration and engagement. There are two aspects to this: establishing other tenets and elucidating the reasonable aspects. The first is, Yeshe Shabs says: The mind of aspiring Bodhicitta is for all worldly beings, and the mind of engaging Bodhicitta starts from the Joyful Ground. Thus, it is considered whether or not the ground has been attained. The Great Lord also holds the same view. In the "Clear Words," it says: The so-called aspiration is merely aspiration, that is, accumulating merit, and not even having taken the generation of that mind through ritual. The so-called engagement refers to the practice of cultivation from the arising of the mind after pleasing the virtuous friend and properly receiving it, up to the uninterrupted path. After explaining this, Shantideva's aspiration and engagement quotes are cited as evidence. In this way, there are different views on whether or not to accept through ritual, and whether or not to obtain non-retrogression, and whether or not to vow to the fruit and cause, but they have not understood well, because they are contrary to the tradition of Shantideva in the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree and its commentary, the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra. The second is, in the Compendium of Trainings, it says: There are two kinds of Bodhicitta, namely the mind of aspiring to Bodhi and the mind of embarking on Bodhi. The Sutra of the Arrayed Tree says: Sons of good family, those sentient beings who aspire to the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi are also rare. Even rarer than that are those sentient beings who embark on unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi. It is like this.

Nga. From the Bodhicaryāvatāra: In brief, the mind of enlightenment should be known as twofold: the mind of aspiring to enlightenment and the mind of engaging in enlightenment. Just as one knows the difference between wanting to go and going, so should the wise gradually understand the difference between these two. These statements are all of the same meaning, so they are explained in this way. Furthermore, Śāntideva quotes this passage, saying that although one does not go beyond the desire for perfect and complete enlightenment for the sake of others, one should understand that the characteristics are different depending on whether or not there is action of body, speech, and mind. Therefore, first, great compassion arises focusing on sentient beings. Based on that, the mere thought of becoming a Buddha in order to liberate all of them from existence arises, which is aspiration. Then, even if one engages in one of the six perfections of the practice of unsurpassed enlightenment by taking vows, etc., it is considered engagement. Therefore, although the essence of aspiration and engagement is the same in that they have the thought of becoming a Buddha for the sake of others, these two are contradictory because there is or is not the involvement of the activity of accomplishing enlightenment. For example, it is like merely having the thought of wanting to go to a certain place and then being involved in the activity of going after embarking on the path. Therefore, aspiration is only the first thought. Similarly, in the first stage of meditation, it says: The mind of enlightenment is also of two types: the mind of entering and the mind of aspiration. After saying this, he quoted the previous sūtra of the Tree Arrangement. Again, it says: Whatever is first sought for the sake of benefiting those beings, that is the mind of aspiration. Whatever is subsequently taken as a vow and entered into the accumulations, that is the mind of entering. Furthermore, Yeshe Drakpa says: By the distinction of desire and the like, the mind of aspiration is of three types. The minds called engagement are considered to be nineteen. In this way, the distinction between aspiration and engagement is made for the twenty-two minds of generation, and the previously quoted sūtra of the Tree Arrangement is cited as evidence, and it is not considered to be examined to recognize the mind of engagement as explained by Kamalaśīla. Because entering the great accumulation path of the Mahāyāna should be regarded as setting out for enlightenment, the sūtra is quoted.
