Definitions and classifications. First, the general definition is: any unknowing that becomes the object of abandonment on the path of meditation. Its definitions of afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations are, in order, unknowing that is both afflicted and unafflicted, becoming the object of abandonment on the path of meditation. Second, there are two ways of explaining. The first, from the perspective of essence, is divided into six, and from the perspective of realms, into sixteen. The *Compendium* says: In the desire realm, there are six things to be abandoned through meditation, namely: the view of the aggregates as a self, the co-emergent view of clinging to extremes, desire, anger, pride, and ignorance. In the form realm, there are five, excluding anger. Just as in the form realm, so too in the formless realm; in short, the sixteen afflictions are the types to be abandoned through meditation. So it says. If divided by grounds, there are forty-six, namely six in the desire realm, five in each of the four concentrations, four times five is twenty. It is the same in the four formless realms. If divided by the degree of size on the grounds, then for each of the nine grounds, the five excluding anger are divided into nine nines, eighty-one each, totaling five categories, and in the desire realm, anger is divided into nine, totaling four hundred and fourteen. The second is, the *Treasury* says: Four are to be abandoned through meditation. Dividing from the perspective of essence, it explains the four: desire, anger, pride, and ignorance. In the upper realms, because there is no anger, there are three each, and dividing by realms, there are ten. These ten, divided as before by the degree of size on the grounds, total two hundred and fifty-two. This is the view of the Vaibhashikas, who consider the first two views to be solely those abandoned by the path of seeing. The former is, in the commentary on the *Analysis of the Five Aggregates*, the latter three views and doubt are solely conceptually imputed, and the rest are both conceptually imputed and co-emergent, as the Sutra school also holds. Third, why are the things to be abandoned by the path of seeing divided from the perspective of wrong adherence to the truth, and the things to be abandoned by the path of meditation divided from the perspective of grounds? Because the things to be abandoned by the path of seeing are the coarse parts produced by evil doctrines deluding the mind, therefore they are abandoned merely by directly seeing the truth, so they are explained from the perspective of wrong adherence to the truth. And the things to be abandoned by the path of meditation, even if not conceptually imputed by evil doctrines, are the subtle parts of co-emergence that have followed since beginningless time.
