By which it arises, the practice of not abiding in samsara and nirvana arises from this. After this arises, in order to place the beings to be tamed according to their respective intentions on the path of the three vehicles, the benefit of others, which is the characteristic of accomplishing them in order, will arise. By what means does it place them? By the intention of being gentle when introducing them, etc., that is, through the remaining three of the gentle intentions and the four doors of intention. There are three examinations of this limit: the nature of intention and gentle intention; the difference between the two; and the consideration of what the definite number is. The first has two: intention and gentle intention. The first is: In the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: "Equality and other meanings, likewise other times, in the minds of beings, know that there are four kinds of intention." Among these four, the intention of equality is: "I myself became the perfectly complete Buddha Vipashyin at that time." As it is said, the Dharmakaya is equal. The intention of other meanings is: "All dharmas are without self-nature, unborn." etc., as it is said, because it is not as it sounds. The intention of other times is: "Those who aspire to be born in Sukhavati will be born there." As it is said, although they are not born immediately after death, the intention is in other times. The intention of the minds of beings is: praising some merits for some, and belittling some who are content with little, etc. The second is: In the Ornament, it says: "Introducing with gentle intention, the characteristic of gentle intention is different, the antidote of gentle intention and the transformation of gentle intention." Among these four, the first is: In order to introduce the Shravakas to the teachings, in order to dispel fear, it shows that form etc. exist. The second is: With intention on the three characteristics, it shows that all dharmas are without self-nature etc. That is also as it says in the Thirty Verses: "Self-nature is of three kinds, in the three kinds of no self-nature, intending all dharmas, therefore it is said to be without self-nature." That is, the completely imputed is without substance as a characteristic, the other-dependent does not arise from itself, but arises from others as arising, the perfectly established ultimate is the meaning or object of non-conceptual wisdom, and because it is not separate from the other-dependent, it is the ultimate

It is like explaining no-self by considering no-self. The third is, as stated in the Ornament of the Mahayana Sutras, "Disparaging the Buddha and the Dharma, being lazy and content with little, acting with pride and desire, regret and uncertainty, are the obscurations of sentient beings; the supreme vehicle is taught as their antidote." It is like teaching in order to subdue the eight faults. The antidote to disparaging the Buddha is explaining the first intention. The antidote to disparaging the Dharma is like saying that if one serves and honors as many Buddhas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, then the realization of the Great Vehicle will arise. This is explained in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle as referring to another meaning. In explaining its meaning, it is said in the scriptures that it is taught with the intention of another meaning, the Dharma of the realization of the Great Vehicle. The antidote to the obscuration of laziness is explained as referring to another time, like saying that merely mentioning the name of the Tathagata Immaculate Moonbeam will certainly lead to unsurpassed enlightenment. The antidote to being content with just a little is like sometimes disparaging generosity and other times praising it. The antidote to acting with desire is like praising the prosperity of the Buddha-fields. The antidote to acting with pride is like praising the perfections of some Buddhas. The antidote to regret is like saying that those who harm Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will go to the higher realms. The antidote to the obscuration of uncertainty and turning back is like prophesying to the Hearers and teaching the One Vehicle. These, along with the intention and the hidden intention, the latter two are only the views of the Mind-Only school. The fourth is to look at leading the profound subject matter to another meaning, as it says: "Knowing the essenceless as essence, abiding well in the inverted, being extremely afflicted by afflictions, one will attain supreme enlightenment." There, essence is the mental wandering. The absence of that is the essenceless. The inverted is what is contrary to pure, bliss, permanence, and self. Affliction is the exhaustion from long-term asceticism. These are stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Hearers and self-nature, likewise subduing faults, and the profound statement itself, these four are the hidden intentions."
