Based on the already established knowledge, if we take the premise of excluding different categories, then either of the two would suffice. However, in order to eliminate erroneous conceptions, both are mentioned. For example, like the consciousness arising from a sense organ damaged by jaundice, some consider this to be manifest. Generally, in order to refute those who consider that which has been established as correct knowledge, such as the eye consciousness that grasps form, etc., are also conceptual thoughts. Therefore, the objects to be excluded by the definition of direct perception are two: valid cognition and non-valid cognition. Non-valid cognition has already been excluded by the very establishment of being newly non-deceptive. Non-manifest valid cognition is definitely only inference. Although it has been excluded by mentioning being free from conceptual thought, mentioning being non-mistaken is for the purpose of excluding other erroneous conceptions. Similarly, non-manifest valid cognition is definitely only inference. Although it has been excluded by mentioning being non-mistaken, mentioning being free from conceptual thought is also for the purpose of excluding other erroneous conceptions, so mentioning both depends on the necessity of eliminating erroneous conceptions. Therefore, some, on the grounds that the consciousness arising from a sense organ damaged by jaundice is conceptual thought, classify it as non-manifest. Some consider it to be non-deceptive in meaning and non-conceptual, so they classify it as manifest. Mentioning being non-mistaken is to eliminate these erroneous conceptions. The third point is to eliminate the doubt about whether this definition is directed towards the Sutra school or the Mind-Only school. In the Tattvasamgraha, it says: "Others, like the Sutra school, in order to collect the treatises of the Yogacara school, consider non-deception to be non-mistaken, which is unreasonable." That is to say, some consider that being free from conceptual thought and non-mistaken, which are mentioned in the definition of manifest, are common views of the Sutra school and the Mind-Only school. Therefore, the meaning of non-mistaken is not that it is non-mistaken with respect to the object of appearance, but rather that it is merely called non-mistaken by being non-deceptive. This is to refute this view. The teacher Shantideva also holds this view. In order to refute it, it is necessary to argue that the meaning of the word non-mistaken is that it is non-mistaken with respect to the object of apprehension, and to refute the view that it is non-deceptive. First, the teacher does not approve of the meaning of the word non-mistaken being like that, because he has said that the definition of being mistaken is appearing as inverted. The non-

The antidote to error is said to be the reversal of appearance, because it is spoken of as being mistaken about the object of appearance. Furthermore, in the Hetusamuccaya it is said, "Because things do not appear, conceptual thought appears like direct perception." In this case, direct perception is said to be not mistaken about the nature of things that appear and are capable of functioning. Moreover, if inference is mistaken because it apprehends what is not that as that, if direct perception is not considered to be the opposite of this, then what is the use of saying that inference itself is mistaken? If it is considered to be the opposite, then inference is mistaken because it is inverted in what is apprehended, and conversely, direct perception is not mistaken, so it is established that direct perception is not mistaken in what is apprehended. It is said that conceptual thought is not direct perception because it is a consciousness that does not manifest the self-character of things, that is, does not function as an object of appearance. If it is said to be direct perception, then it should appear in accordance with how things exist. Because it is said to be not mistaken about the object of apprehension that is capable of functioning. Furthermore, if it is repeatedly said that inference is mistaken because it apprehends what is not that as that, if direct perception is not considered to be the opposite of this, then there is no need to repeatedly say that inference alone is mistaken in that way. If it is said that direct perception is the opposite of this, then inference is mistaken about the object of apprehension, but not mistaken about the object of focus. Because direct perception is not mistaken from the perspective of being the opposite of the way inference is mistaken, it is established that direct perception is not mistaken about the object of apprehension. This is the meaning to be expressed. The second point is, in the Hetusamuccaya it is said, "Furthermore, direct perception is itself a division of valid cognition." Regarding the statement that "valid cognition is free from conceptual thought and is not mistaken," it is meaningless to take the term "not mistaken" as a synonym for valid cognition, meaning "not deceptive." It is said that the meaning is, in the Pramāṇaviniścaya it is said, "Valid cognition is of two kinds, namely direct perception and inference." These are used after completely determining the meaning, because there is no deception in functioning things. In the context of "because there is no deception, it has already been established as valid cognition," what has already been established as valid cognition serves as the basis.
