When inherent existence is not observed, then the afflictions such as attachment that arise from the thought that form and so forth are inherently existent will be exhausted. The Hearers and Solitary Realizers will pass into nirvana without taking rebirth. Although Bodhisattvas have seen such selflessness, they are compelled by compassion to take rebirth in samsara until enlightenment. Thus, both the Great and Small Vehicles share this essential point of the path, so the wise should thoroughly seek out selflessness as it has been explained. The third has three parts: exemplifying with objects such as pots and cloths, exemplifying with cause and effect objects, and refuting the arguments of others. The first is to show that just as the imputation of self and what is apprehended as self are similar to the analysis of a chariot, so too is the analysis of other objects. Therefore, it says: Those objects such as pots, cloths, cliffs, armies, forests, garlands, trees, houses, small carts, and inns, when analyzed in the manner of a chariot, are not found in the sevenfold search for their respective designata. But apart from that search, they exist in the world without analysis, through common convention. Some Tibetan lamas say that a small cart, "Shag-ga-tra," is a wheeled vehicle that can carry about three or four small carts' worth of goods, and that it also has wheels and a house in the middle. Likewise, it should be understood that those other objects of the same kind that are designated and named by people also exist only in unanalyzed convention. Why? Because the King of Sages said that he does not dispute with the world. In the "Three Vows" chapter of the Ratnakuta Sutra, it says, "The world disputes with me, but I do not dispute with the world." Therefore, the Tathagata has also acknowledged that harmless worldly conventions exist, so one should not harm worldly conventions. Furthermore, how do worldly people designate objects with names? To show this, it is said: Just as a pot is a composite of parts, and

For example, leaves and so on are parts of a tree, a vase is virtuous, the blue color of peacock feathers and so on are its virtues, sentient beings or individuals who are attached to pleasant objects, the basis of attachment is attachment, and excessive craving with tainted and pleasant objects as the object is desire. A vase is the referent, and a bulging belly, drooping lips, and a long neck are its characteristics. Fire is what burns, and firewood is what is burned. Relying on the part, there is the whole, and relying on the whole, there is the part. Similarly, fire and firewood depend on each other. Although these imputed meanings cannot be found when searching for the sevenfold analysis, they can still be established as existent. This is a conventional way of speaking, and should not be subjected to the scrutiny of reasoning that analyzes ultimate reality. Secondly, it is said that not only parts and so on are established in dependence on each other, but also cause and effect are established in dependence on each other. Because if a cause produces an effect, then the producer is the cause; if it does not produce an effect, then there is no production, and the effect becomes causeless. If the effect has a cause, then it will arise from that cause. Therefore, both cause and effect exist in dependence on each other, and are not self-existent. If you think that cause and effect are established by their own nature, then, alas! Cause or effect, relying on what does either become a cause or an effect? Please tell me which of the two, cause or effect, comes into being first. If it is self-established, it is not reasonable for the cause to precede the effect, because at the time of the cause, the effect on which the cause depends must already be established. It is also not reasonable for the effect to precede the cause, because that would make it causeless. Therefore, the designation of cause and effect, like a chariot, is also understood to be established in dependence on each other, and is not produced from its own nature. Furthermore, if the cause produces the effect by its own nature, does it produce it by contacting the effect or by not contacting it? If, according to your view, the cause produces the effect by contacting the effect,
