According to this view, it is not in accordance with my system, because it is unborn. If consciousness is not established by its own nature, then your example where both are established is not possible. Without an external object, consciousness cannot exist. Here, it is not that the cognizing consciousness is shown to be non-existent, just as the elephant appearing in a dream is non-existent, but it must be necessarily accepted that it is showing that consciousness established by its own nature is non-existent. As previously stated, the Mind-Only school accepts the other-powered nature as being without an external object, because the other-powered nature is established by its own nature, and these refutations are comparing meanings. In short, just as the knowable does not exist, so too does the mind not exist. In the commentary on "just as the knowable does not exist, so too does the mind not exist," it is clearly stated that the mind with the aspect of the knowable should also be understood as not arising from its own essence. Furthermore, in both the root verses and the commentary, when refuting such views, there are many differences added to the object being refuted. Moreover, why did the Great Lord (referring to the Buddha) say, "From ignorance arises karma, from karma arises consciousness"? Since it is said that ignorance produces formations, and formations produce consciousness, this is also his own view. Therefore, for those who say that consciousness does not exist in this system, there is no room for doubt for those with intelligence. Therefore, all equating of existence and non-existence for the knowable and consciousness should be understood from the perspective of the differences of the object being refuted. If consciousness in a dream is not mistaken, then why would one not remember the experiences of the dream time after waking up? This is an argument that consciousness is not established by its own nature, and therefore consciousness does not exist at all. Such an argument is also unreasonable. If, when waking up, one remembers the experiences of the dream, and therefore thinks that the mind in the dream exists by its own nature, then the external objects appearing in the dream, such as the elephant, should also exist like the mind. Why? Just as you, when waking up, have the memory of the object, "I saw it in the dream," and therefore think that the mind exists, so too in the dream there is the experience of the object, "I saw this object," so the external object should also have such a memory. Therefore, either the object also exists, or it should be admitted that consciousness also does not exist. Then, the dream...

Since the mindfulness of objects and subjects also exists in their own nature, how should we deal with the presence or absence of these two? Here, the commentary speaks of remembering the experience of dreams and remembering the experience of the objects of dreams. When elephants and other things appear in dreams, for example, when seeing the reflection of a face, although the eye consciousness that perceives the reflection does not experience the face, just as there is an experience of the object dependent on the reflection, in the dream state, although there is no experience of the object experiencing the elephant, there is an experience of the object appearing in it, so it is said to remember the object, but in reality, it is remembering the experience of that object. Distinguishing the experienced object separately is not necessary for many such cases, except for a few occasions. In this way, the other-powered, which is empty of external objects and established by its own nature, cannot be established, because there is no real example. Just as in proving the existence of past and future lives, although there is no real example, there is no example here like proving it by other methods of reasoning. Therefore, it should be understood that refuting the Mind-Only school is a very powerful reasoning. The second point is: if forms such as elephants exist in dreams, then the eye consciousness that grasps them must also exist in dreams, which is unreasonable. Because when one falls asleep, disturbed by sleep, eye consciousness cannot exist. Therefore, forms such as elephants cannot be grasped by the eye sense faculty, only mind consciousness exists. Therefore, the sense faculty of external forms does not exist, and it is only in the appearance of mind consciousness that the appearance of external forms appears, and there is an inevitable clinging to the external object itself. Just as in dreams there is no external object, only the appearance of consciousness, do they think the same in the waking state? Even if the previous example is not established, they think that the absence of external objects in the waking state can be established by the example of dreams. But this is not correct, because it is impossible for mind consciousness to arise in dreams. What is said is that even if there is no form sense faculty in dreams, it is impossible for mind consciousness, which is established by its own nature without the form sense faculty, to exist even in dreams. Therefore, the non-existence of external objects and the existence of mind consciousness by its own nature are contradictory.
