If not, then attaining Buddhahood would also be impossible. If it is said that the person who initially generates the mind of enlightenment is tainted by ignorance, then, the way to explain that there is no such fault is: The way that a Buddha's wisdom knows knowable objects is twofold, namely, the way of knowing all knowable objects of ultimate truth and the way of knowing all knowable objects of conventional truth. The first of these is to know the suchness of aggregates and so forth without seeing the appearances of conventionalities. The second is that because the force of realization that is not apparent cannot be placed on the Buddha, it is necessary to know after appearance. Therefore, in the presence of the wisdom that knows as it is, it is known in the manner of the appearance of both object and subject. Although the Buddha's knowledge of as it is is not tainted by the imprints of ignorance, and therefore aggregates and so on do not appear, the appearance to the Buddha is necessary because the consciousness of other individuals is tainted by ignorance, because that appearance is indispensable, and if there is convention, it must be the object of knowledge of as it is. Just as in the absence of cataracts, the consciousness of the eye does not appear as the hair falling that appears to those with cataracts, but that appearance is not indispensable, so it is not the same as the Buddha. Until the imprints of dualistic appearance are exhausted, the two, suchness and as it is, cannot arise as one entity, so they must be measured alternately, so it is impossible to measure the two on one moment of wisdom. When the imprints of delusion have been completely abandoned, on each moment of wisdom, the two wisdoms arise as one entity without interruption, so there is no need to alternately measure whether or not the two are simultaneously realized. Therefore, even with a single moment of knowledge, it pervades the entire mandala of knowable objects, and this is not contradictory. Although the two wisdoms are one entity, there is no contradiction in the fact that there are two different ways of knowing in relation to the two objects, and this is a unique characteristic of the one Buddha, the Bhagavan. If only the way of knowing suchness is taken as the way of knowing the Buddha, and it is said that the Buddha's mindstream does not have the knowledge of as it is, but is instead possessed by the mindstream of those to be tamed, then the Buddha's knowledge of as it is

And to cast aspersions on that (suchness), some say that the suchness is not in the mindstream of the Buddha, which seems to be casting aspersions on both wisdoms. Some of the remainder of these will be discussed in the context of the fruit. If all dualistic appearances have ceased, is not such a nature invisible? So how do those Buddhas see the ultimate truth? It is true that in the vision of suchness, dualistic appearances have ceased, so they do not see in a dualistic way. However, it is said that they see in a way that they do not see. The way this goes as an answer to the debate is: because the wisdom of knowing as it is directly sees the suchness of the aggregates, etc., and because the aggregates, etc., do not exist in that vision, they are the suchness of those, and it is necessary to see the suchness of those in a way that the aggregates, etc., are not seen. In the self-commentary, it says: Without touching conditioned things, only directly realizing the nature, therefore, because of understanding that, it is called Buddha. Thus, the ultimate wisdom of the Buddha says that without touching the object of dharma, only understanding the nature of dharma, which is the same meaning as saying that the suchness of those is seen in a way that the aggregates, etc., are not seen. The meaning of saying that not seeing is the supreme seeing is also, it is not considered that seeing nothing is seeing. As explained before, not seeing elaboration is established as seeing freedom from elaboration, so seeing and not seeing are not done on the same basis. In that way, the Compendium also says: Forms are not seen, feelings are also not seen, perception is not seen, and thoughts are not seen. In whom consciousness, mind, and intellect are not seen, this is seeing the Dharma, as taught by the Thus-Gone One. Beings often say the word "seeing the sky." How is the sky seen? Let them examine this. Thus, seeing the Dharma is also taught by the Thus-Gone One. Seeing cannot be expressed by another example. It says that what is not seen is the five aggregates, and what is seen is the Dharma, which is the meaning of suchness, as it is said, whoever sees dependent origination sees the Dharma. That is also like the sky is unobstructed.
