The water is very clear, and the wind is not very strong, so in the interior where the water's components are pervaded by moisture, there is an image of the moon. From the image, together with the water, which is the object of reliance previously focused upon, each moment decays, and as if the actual substance of the moon itself appears manifestly, those noble ones who are skilled in this way see impermanence in each moment, and the emptiness of the nature of the moon that appears. Just like that example, bodhisattvas who have become empowered by compassion also, for sentient beings who fall into the ocean of views of destruction, the blue water of ignorance that flows in order to increase it, possessing great vastness, dwelling within that which is moved by the wind of improper attention's conceptualizations, those who are present in front like images of their own black and white karma, like the moon in the sky, when they see the suffering of compoundedness falling upon them in each moment, and the emptiness of self-established nature, then great compassion arises in dependence upon them, and that also arises from thinking about sentient beings being pleasing and the way they wander in samsara, as previously explained. Although the view of destruction is ignorance, the reason for separately explaining ignorance from that is that the view of destruction refers to the ignorance of self-grasping of phenomena that leads to it. Here, in the commentary, it is said that the three types of compassion are not distinguished by their aspects, but by their objects. Therefore, the aspect of all three is the aspect of wanting sentient beings to be separated from suffering. It is also the same that they are focused on sentient beings. In the case of the first compassion, it is said to be compassion for beings, and in the case of the latter two, it is also said that beings move, so it is to show that sentient beings are the focus. Therefore, compassion focused on phenomena is not focused on sentient beings alone, but on sentient beings that perish in an instant. Therefore, it is focused on sentient beings that are distinguished by momentary impermanence. When it is certain that sentient beings perish in an instant, the existence of a permanent, single, independent sentient being is blocked in that mind, so it is able to ascertain that there is no sentient being with a nature different from the aggregates. At that time, since it is understood that sentient beings are merely imputed upon the collection of aggregates, therefore, since it goes to focusing on sentient beings who are merely imputed upon the phenomena of aggregates, etc., therefore it is focusing on phenomena.

It is called "object of focus." The so-called "impermanent sentient being" is merely symbolic. Even in cases such as focusing on sentient beings that are not independent entities, it is called "focusing on the Dharma." Therefore, focusing on sentient beings that are merely labeled as Dharma is called "focusing on the Dharma," which is to omit the intermediate words. Compassion that focuses on the absence of focus does not merely focus on sentient beings, but focuses on sentient beings who are empty of inherent existence with a special focus. Absence of focus means that there is no object of attachment like grasping at characteristics, it is without inherent existence. Focusing on sentient beings distinguished by the absence of inherent existence is called "focusing on the absence of focus," or "compassion without focus," which is to omit the intermediate words. Many Tibetan commentators say that the second compassion focuses on destruction in an instant, and the third compassion focuses on the absence of inherent existence. These are explanations that have not well understood the aspects of these objects of focus. The second compassion must acknowledge the aspect of sentient beings wanting to be separated from suffering. If the two, momentariness and absence of inherent existence, are regarded as objects of the aspect, then one compassion will become two different ways of grasping. Therefore, when placing sentient beings distinguished by two distinctions as the object of compassion, a person with two compassions must rely on having previously ascertained that sentient beings are momentary and without inherent existence, so that the aspects of the two characteristics arise, but compassion does not need to focus on those two. In both the root text and commentary, it is said that the latter two compassions focus on sentient beings distinguished by the previously mentioned distinctions, while the first compassion is not distinguished by such distinctions, but it is said that it focuses only on sentient beings. Therefore, considering this, compassion that focuses on sentient beings is also a collective name for the sake of easy terminology. Therefore, to think that this first compassion must focus on permanent, singular, and independent sentient beings is an unreasonable statement, because even compassion in the continuum that has not attained the view of selflessness has many instances of arising by focusing only on sentient beings, and the self of a person
