Because beings are oppressed by the pervasive suffering of conditioned existence, they are no different from the state of a water bucket's carrying yoke. Here, the combination of Dharma is done through six differentiating factors, not just to generate a mere understanding of how sentient beings wander in samsara. So, how is it done? Although it was previously taught that those who wish to enter the Mahayana must first generate great compassion, the method of generating compassion through meditating on what was not previously taught. Therefore, here, like teaching the way sentient beings wander involuntarily in samsara, it is showing the way to generate great compassion. That is: Who is it that puts us in samsara? It is this very mind that is extremely unpacified and untamed. Where and how does it wander? In this place from the peak of existence to the Avici hell, there is not even a moment when it does not wander. By what cause and condition does it wander? By the power of karma and afflictions. That is, by the power of non-meritorious karma and its afflictions, one wanders in the lower realms, and by the power of meritorious and unwavering karma and its afflictions, one wanders in the higher realms. The former naturally tends to strive for the sake of being born there, while the latter is difficult because one must accomplish those causes with great effort. As it is said in the scripture: "Moving from the happy and unhappy realms to the unhappy realms is like the dust of the great earth, and moving from those two to the happy realms is like the dust picked up by the tip of a fingernail." At the time of any one of the three afflictions in a single chain of dependent origination, the other two all-pervasive afflictions of the other chain also intervene, so it is not interrupted. Think daily of being tormented again and again by the three sufferings like ripples of water. Also, if one first thinks about how one wanders in samsara, nothing changes in one's mind. If one thinks about other sentient beings, since beginners cannot bear their suffering, as stated in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, one must first think about oneself, and then meditate on other sentient beings. So, does merely meditating on how other sentient beings are tormented by all kinds of suffering in samsara lead to great compassion?

If you think you need another companion, then, here, seeing the enemy suffer, if you cannot bear it, but are happy, and for those who have not done any favors or harm, seeing them suffer, if you mostly ignore them, it is because it does not suit your mind. Seeing relatives suffer is unbearable, and the more it suits your mind, the more intensely you feel unable to bear their suffering. Therefore, it is very important to generate a pleasing mind that cherishes and pities sentient beings very much. Regarding what methods to use to generate a pleasing mind, the wise ones have two views. The first is that Chandrakirti, in his commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, said that if you think that sentient beings have been relatives such as parents from beginningless time, then, in order to save them, you can endure jumping into samsara, as he said. The great accomplished Chandragomin and the great scholar Kamalasila also said this. The second view is that of the glorious Shantideva, which can be understood from what has already been said elsewhere. In this way, through the ways that sentient beings are very cherished in the heart, and suffer in samsara, those who strive to cultivate great compassion make the unique praise made by Chandrakirti meaningful. If it is not like that, then those who consider themselves clever are like parrots reciting scriptures, and it should be understood in the same way in other situations. The way to approach compassion that focuses on sentient beings will be explained later. Secondly, regarding compassion that focuses on dharma and compassion that focuses on nothing, in order to clarify through the way of focusing, the word "aspect" is mentioned twice. Sentient beings are like the moon in water stirred by the wind, wavering and unstable, seeing its momentary destruction, I prostrate to the one who has compassion for it. This sentence is a prostration combined with compassion for the object of dharma. Similarly, sentient beings are like the moon's reflection in water, although they appear to be established by their own nature, yet seeing them as empty, I prostrate to the one who has compassion for them. This sentence is a prostration combined with compassion that has no object. The commentary says that after establishing "sentient beings," saying "I prostrate to the one who has compassion," this is considering that the following two objects have the word "sentient beings." Like this,
