Having refuted the arising of "self" as being conceived from other than itself, even in the mundane language of those who have not studied the tenets of other schools, it is shown that the understanding of arising from "self" is unreasonable. Because even in a seed, one sees the fruit of that seed. The world also does not accept that the earth and the sprout are the same entity. Thirdly, because arising from "self" is contradictory to reason in both the ultimate and conventional aspects, this extreme speculation that external and internal things arise from "self" is not reasonable in either the ultimate or conventional truth. Therefore, when the noble ones refute the arising of "self," they do not differentiate between the ultimate and conventional, but universally refute the arising of "self," saying that it does not arise from "self." Therefore, it should be thought that the distinction made by Acharya Bhāviveka, who said, "Things do not arise from 'self' in the ultimate sense, because they exist, like a sentient being," is meaningless. Secondly, there are other faults as well: If it is asserted that the effect arises from "self," then the effect to be produced, the cause that produces, the action to be done, and the agent who does it will all become one and the same. Since these are not the same, it should not be accepted that they arise from "self," because it would lead to the faults extensively explained in this treatise and in the Root Verses on the Middle Way. Among these, the first fault is stated in the Root Verses: "Cause and effect being one, is never reasonable. If cause and effect are one, the producer and the produced become one." That is, if the essence of cause and effect is one, then the father and son, or the eye and its consciousness, would also become one. The second fault is stated in the Root Verses: "If the wood is fire, the agent and the action become one." When refuting in this way, if it is said that the father and son, and the agent and the action, both become one in essence, that is acceptable. If it is said that they become one universally, that is not pervasive. However, if one asserts that the nature is one as previously explained, then according to the reasoning that can deduce that the transformation is also one, it cannot be refuted. Therefore, as stated above,

Fearing faults and wishing to realize the two truths without distortion, it is said that self-origination should not be accepted. Whether origination from self exists or not, if one is completely eliminated and the other is not separately eliminated, because they are contradictory in non-existence, then when origination from self Pages 201 to 300 does not exist, it must be accepted. The second part has two divisions: stating the former view and refuting that system. The first is: Those of our own school who assert substantiality say that origination from oneself is meaningless, so self-origination is unreasonable. Without self-origination, origination from both is also unreasonable. Causelessness is complete annihilation, so even refuting it is reasonable, but how can one refute origination from others? Because relying on the scriptures, which say that the four conditions that transform into otherness by their own nature are the causes of the arising of all things, even unwillingly, one should accept origination from others. Where are those four conditions established? Some schools think that the causal condition is what is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Cause is said to be the five causes," the five causes other than the efficient cause. The objective condition is: "The objective is all dharmas." Referring to all the objects of the six consciousnesses. The immediately preceding condition is: "Mind and mental events that have arisen, not the last, the same, are immediately preceding." Referring to the previously arisen mind and mental events other than those entering cessation without remainder. The dominant condition is: "The efficient cause is called dominant." They think it is explained as the efficient cause. The six causes are what is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Efficient cause, co-arising, similar, associated, pervasive, and ripening, cause is considered to be six kinds." So it is. Some schools think that: "That which accomplishes is the cause," from the perspective of showing the characteristic: "Whatever is the cause of the arising of anything, existing in the nature of a seed, that is its causal condition." Just as an old man stands up, the mind and mental events that are arising, like relying on a cane, whatever object arises from, that is its objective condition. The immediately preceding condition is the immediately preceding condition of the arising of the fruit immediately after the cessation of the cause, for example, the immediately preceding condition of the arising of a sprout immediately after the cessation of a seed. The self-commentary says that the similarity of the sprout immediately after the cessation of the seed is the immediately preceding condition.
