It is said that sentient beings are each a stream of consciousness. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇavārttika), "They are only of the same kind, because the function is definitely transformed." As it is said, we believe that consciousnesses of the same kind do not arise simultaneously in one person, but it is definitely not the case that consciousnesses of different kinds do not arise simultaneously. When many Tibetans look at "Zaok" (a kind of Tibetan silk), doesn't the consciousness that grasps white, red, etc., arise simultaneously? In response to this question, some people say, "Those consciousnesses arise sequentially, but they appear to arise simultaneously." Those who say this have neither understood that the main meaning of "each stream of consciousness" is directed at consciousnesses of the same kind, nor have they understood that one eye consciousness can grasp many different colors, and they have not even recognized the eye consciousness that grasps variegated colors. Therefore, in response to the argument of whether consciousnesses of the same kind arise simultaneously, it should be answered, "Those consciousnesses arise quickly, and although they arise sequentially, they appear to arise simultaneously." Although it seems that this is how it should be explained, since the two who establish self-awareness have already refuted in the Commentary on Valid Cognition that the reason for the rapid arising is mistaken for simultaneous arising, it seems difficult to classify this treatise into the tenets of those two, perhaps due to the incorrectness of the Sanskrit original, but those with wisdom should study this. Therefore, in order to avoid the faults of being without interruption and not cutting off other objects, one must unhesitatingly admit self-awareness. Therefore, from the later arising memory of both the object and the subject, it can be inferred that when blue was seen earlier, there was an experience of the object and an experience of the subject. Even so, if there is self-awareness of self-experience, then self-awareness can also establish the existence of external objects, if so, who can know this existence? This is actually giving an approximate answer to the question raised by the Madhyamaka school. So it is said. The second part has three points: directly refuting the views of others; the way in which our school generates memory without self-awareness; and the elimination of arguments against such refutation. The first point is: If it is assumed that things are established by their own nature, then from the later memory, it can be established that the previous consciousness as the object of memory is self-aware, then, in order to prove that the opponent has not established self-awareness, it is necessary to state the memory of

That which is not established as being like me, is not to establish self-awareness, just as establishing sound as impermanent, like the object of the eye. However, if it is according to worldly terms, there is no memory of the fruit of self-awareness. Why is that? If it is not established here, just as smoke is known to be its fruit, if self-awareness is established, then the relationship of memory arising from it is established, and from memory it is certain that there is self-awareness, then that self-awareness is still not established in the refutation. Therefore, there is no fruit of self-awareness, and without self-awareness, memory will not arise. An example of not being established without a relationship is that merely seeing water and fire does not lead to inferring water crystal and fire crystal, because even without them, water and fire can arise from rain and drilling wood, etc. Similarly, here too, how memory arises without self-awareness will be explained. In response to this refutation, it is said that memory and self-awareness are like non-existence, through establishing the cause and effect relationship, memory does not infer self-awareness, but as previously stated, memory infers that the previous knowledge had experience, and if it is divided into self-experience and other-experience to negate it, although it is said that self-experience is established, the two positions established by the Sutra school and the Mind-Only school regarding knowledge and awareness are not determined. Just as a lamp does not illuminate itself, but brightness does not disappear from it, knowledge does not experience itself as the former party believes, but only the experience does not disappear from it. If the lamp illuminates itself, then darkness would also obscure itself, and if that is accepted, just as a pot is not seen in a dark place, darkness would also not be seen. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: If a lamp illuminates itself and others, there is no doubt that darkness also obscures itself and others. As it is said. If we abandon such analysis, the knowledge of one's own nature and the knowledge of objects are established, but even if they are established, it is not reasonable for the memory consciousness to remember the objects and the subject, the later memory consciousness
