The emptiness of one great thing without another is the most excellent of all emptinesses, as stated in the Lankavatara Sutra. It is unreasonable to say, "Because a cow is a horse, it is empty, therefore it does not exist," because it exists by its own nature. Such things should be said, as stated in the commentary. Regarding "by its own nature," it is good to translate it as "because the nature of black exists." The way this emptiness of one without another becomes similar to an example is: The emptiness of self-nature taught by the Bhagavan is to reverse the clinging of beings who, from beginningless time, have clung to things like form as truly existent. In this regard, it is necessary to show that this other-powered nature that appears as form and so on is not truly established. If it is not shown in this way, but it is shown that this other-powered nature is not truly established as different substances of grasper and grasped, it is like saying that because there is no cow, it is non-existent like a cow. Therefore, in the views of both the Madhyamaka and Yogacara schools, there is no difference in the way beings cling to the basis of what appears as outer and inner phenomena. Showing that these are empty is also the same in that it is to reverse the clinging to that basis. However, the way of clinging is different. The Mind-Only school clings to the appearance of the grasper and grasped as being far apart, as they appear, as different substances. As an antidote to this, they hold the appearance as a phenomenon of other-power and negate the existence of different substances of grasper and grasped, thus negating that the basis of negation is the object to be negated. According to the Madhyamaka school, the way of clinging is to cling to appearances as truly existent, not established by conventional consciousness. As an antidote to this, they hold the appearance as a subject and negate that it is not truly existent in that way. This is also negating that the basis of negation is the object to be negated, because when beings cling, they do not hold that the object to be negated exists outside of that basis, but rather they cling to that basis as the nature of the object to be negated. Moreover, emptiness must also be shown in the way it is clung to, because it exists in that way. Therefore, making the basis of present appearances empty of true existence turns it into annihilationist emptiness, abandoning these and seeking other appearances.

Taking "one" as the basis of emptiness, because what is to be refuted is "it," it does not show emptiness by emptiness, but shows emptiness by the existence of things. This is not any view of the Madhyamaka or Yogacara schools. Even if there is or is not a consciousness that clings to such a refutable object in the beginningless manifestation clinging in the continuum of sentient beings, one must turn inward and examine it. Therefore, the glorious Dharmakirti said, "There is also a subsequent statement about this. Therefore, it is covered by the evil darkness." Saying this, like these in a very prosperous time, those with discernment should know. In the explanation here, from the Sutra of Meeting Father and Son, the determination of the twenty-two roots as being without self-nature is quoted, that is, "Thus it is only named, but ultimately, the eyes and roots are not observed." And "Similarly, all dharmas are also not inherently existent." Saying this, dharmas are merely named, and ultimately and inherently they are non-existent. Therefore, applying distinctions to what is to be refuted, these two are different categories, and it is said that all ways of establishing oneself are merely naming. The realm of playing in a dream, even if it is not found in the dream, what need is there to say when awake? Having said so much, it is very unreasonable to say that there is no difference between a person in a dream and a person when awake in terms of whether they are a person, because those sentient beings who are friends in play are not found as those sentient beings even in the dream, and it must be established that those sentient beings are found when awake. Therefore, thinking that there are sense consciousnesses such as eye consciousness in dreams, according to this view, one should know that this is a great mistake. In this way, without realizing the ultimate wisdom of the Yogacara school, and attributing it to a sect, this is completely what should be eliminated. Third, if external objects do not exist, then the consciousnesses that appear clearly as forms, sounds, etc. are not inherently established, then how is it reasonable that the yogis who practice ugliness through the oral instructions of the guru see the earth filled with skeletons? Because even if the skeletons do not exist, the inherently established consciousness exists. If you think like this, the yogi who practices ugliness through the oral instructions of the guru, with skeletons filling the earth
