Meditating on the lack of inherent existence of body, speech, and mind. Firstly, when meditating on the lack of inherent existence of the visible form body, one should take the body of the Thus-Gone One as the object of focus. That is, one should contemplate the various parts of the body such as the head and hands, the faculties such as the eyes, the thirty-two major marks such as the crown protuberance, the eighty minor marks such as fingernails the color of red copper, and even the collection of pores. By examining each one individually, none of them are established as the actual body of the Thus-Gone One. Likewise, these things do not arise from any direction, up or down, aggregates, elements, sense fields, earth, water, fire, wind, the future, the past, the present, things, non-things, conditioned phenomena, unconditioned phenomena, the appearance of emptiness, or samsara and nirvana. Thus, these things do not abide in the essence of anything. They do not go anywhere, so one should remain in equanimity on that which is free from elaboration and without inherent existence. The sixty branches of speech are like the sound echoing in an empty valley, without inherent existence. Where does that sound come from—the throat, tongue, teeth, flesh, bones, the inner, outer, or middle of the body, or any direction, up or down? Where does it abide now? Where will it go from there? By examining, one should know that these sounds do not arise from anywhere, do not abide anywhere, and do not go anywhere, and remain in equanimity. Thirdly, one should take any hand implement such as a vajra as the object of focus, and examine the inner, outer, and middle of these implements, large parts and small parts, directions, up and down, shape, color, etc., one by one. None of them are the actual vajra, etc. Because nothing can establish its inherent existence, it is free from all elaborations and has become like the sky. Therefore, one should remain in equanimity. Thus, the body, speech, and mind of the Thus-Gone One arise in dependence. The unexamined essence is established, but through examination by wisdom, in the essence of equanimity, nothing can establish its inherent existence. It is free from elaboration, beyond the realm of speech and thought, and cannot be represented by any example. Just as it is free from all extremes, one should know all the phenomena of samsara and nirvana. Because the nature of all phenomena is undifferentiated and of one nature, it transcends all characteristics of acceptance and rejection, negation and affirmation, grasper and grasped, and object and subject. If one does not understand these, then one will not attain nirvana.

It should be known that Nirvana is profound and peaceful. Until it is known, it should be meditated upon. Moreover, before meditating on the selflessness of persons, one should seek the person; before meditating on the selflessness of phenomena, one should distinguish and seek any phenomenon such as form; before meditating on the selflessness of Nirvana, one should seek the body of the Tathagata; for each object of focus, one should ask questions and learn, and especially when focusing with vipassana, for each object of focus, it is important to seek proof with scripture and reason that the nature of phenomena is dependent arising and without inherent existence. This is because, until a definitive understanding of dependent arising arises from within, there is no opportunity for the experience of vipassana to arise. Here, although there is no extensive explanation of one's own system with scripture and reason, a small part will be explained during the introduction. Furthermore, one should combine the definitive meaning scriptures and the reasoning of pure treatises to understand the extensive meaning. Third, the introduction has two parts: a brief indication and a detailed explanation. The first is: Since it is said that "dependent arising is without inherent existence," dependent arising refers to dependent arising that is caused by causes and that is mutually dependent. The first, like a vase, is that the vase arises dependent on the collection of all causes and conditions such as clay and the effort of a person's hands, but if analyzed individually, it does not arise from clay alone. Similarly, if each of the others is analyzed individually, it does not arise from any one of them, so it is without inherent existence. These causes and conditions arise dependent on the collection, so it is not dependent arising. Mutually dependent arising is that the vase is dependent on the collection of all parts such as the mouth, neck, belly, lips, and bottom, so that it can perform the function of a vase, which is dependent arising. If each of these is analyzed individually, none of them is a vase, and similarly, the mouth alone cannot perform the function of a vase. Each atom does not make up any part of the vase. If the direction of that atom is analyzed from all directions, above and below, the inherent existence of the vase is not established. Therefore, it should be known that the dependent arising of all phenomena is without inherent existence. If it were inherently established, it would not need to depend on anything and would be permanent and unchanging.
