Similarly, in the view of the Prasangikas who do not accept the alaya-vijnana, the object to which the term 'I' applies is, at that time, merely a basis, a support for the latent tendencies of what is to be abandoned by meditation. That is also the 'I' imputed to the stream of consciousness, or merely the person. If someone asks: In the Commentary on the Engaging, it says, 'That which pollutes the mind-continuum, causes activity, and follows after, is called a latent tendency.' Thus, the basis on which latent tendencies are imprinted is said to be the mind-continuum. But the person is not the mind-continuum, so it should not be a basis for imprinting latent tendencies. Answer: There is no fault, because just as that person's mind sees forms, so establishing that person as the seer is not contradictory. Similarly, that person's stream of consciousness is the basis for imprinting latent tendencies, and the person imputed to it being the basis for latent tendencies is not contradictory. In this way, one should also understand the support where the latent tendencies of what is to be abandoned by seeing reside, and so forth. That previous argument was explained as one reasoning for establishing the alaya-vijnana, and by the way of answering it, one can also infer other reasonings. Second: Furthermore, if arising produces itself, then is it produced by what is unborn or what is born? Among these, if it is according to the first case, this arising is unborn, so how can it produce its own nature? It cannot produce it. Otherwise, even a flower in the sky would produce itself. If it is produced by what is born, then if it is already produced, what else is there to produce again? Because there is nothing to produce, arising does not produce itself. If it does not produce itself, then another characteristic is needed, and if that is the case, one cannot avoid infinite regress. If one says that it is neither produced by itself nor produced by another, then it is unconditioned. If it does not exist, then those unconditioned things, as explained in the Commentary on the Lamp of Wisdom and its annotations, abide in their respective places, so from here one should completely refute the common view of the three characteristics. From 'born and unborn' onwards, it is the beginning of separate refutations, and one can understand the beginning of the separate refutations of the other two by the demarcation. Therefore, up to this point, in the context of pointing out faults in the two characteristics of existence and non-existence, and refuting the faults, although only arising is mentioned, one can also understand that it also refutes the faults of the other two. Second, divided into three: Refuting that arising is established by its own nature; abiding

Refutation of establishment by self-nature. Refutation of destruction and cessation being established by self-nature. The first has three parts. Refuting by examining the object of production in the three times. Refuting by examining the three aspects of existence and non-existence. Refuting by examining whether it is in the process of ceasing or not. The first has three parts. Refuting production in general and in particular. On the refutation, abandoning disputes. Also refuting by accepting that it is in the process of being produced. The first has two parts. Refuting production in the three times in general. Refuting the process of production in particular. The first is: Production does not produce anything other than itself. The reason for this is that the past, that is, the action of production has ceased, and the future, that is, the action of production has not begun, and the present, the three do not produce in any way. That is explained in the second chapter by preventing going in the past, not going in the future, and going in the present. Just as the past has no action of going because the past and present are contradictory, so the past that has ceased has no action of production because the past and present are contradictory. The future that has not gone has no action of going because the future and present are contradictory. Likewise, the future that has not begun the action of production has no action of production because the future and present are contradictory. The present going also has no action of going because, except for the past and future, the present going cannot be perceived. Likewise, the object of production in the present has no production because, except for the past and future, there is no present production. This is like what was said earlier about the present going. In general, although the past and future are contradictory, it is not prevented by taking that as a reason, because the past and future that have been examined in two ways, and the past and future here, must have the same meaning, and those two are said to be liberated from the past that has ceased and the future. Therefore, the production that is neither the past that has ceased nor the future that has not begun the action of production exists nominally in the present, so it means that there is no production in the present by its own nature except for the two times of past and future. If one wants to assert the action of production in the object of production in the present, which is neither of the two, then one should also take out and transform the reasoning that prevents the action of going in the present going and refute it.
