Since there is no path that is being traveled and no path that has been traveled, there is no beginning of travel for these two. If it is said that, at that time, although these two do not exist, there is an untraveled path and that travel begins there, then, the untraveled path is one where the activity of traveling has not begun, so how could it have a beginning of travel? It does not. Secondly, if it is said that although the three paths do not have a beginning of travel, the three paths exist, and if there is no travel, these are not acceptable, then, if the beginning of travel exists, then where the activity of traveling has ceased is the traveled, where it is currently in the middle state is the being-traveled, and where it has not arisen is the untraveled, thus one should examine. When examined in all ways, the beginning of travel appears in all ways, which is itself without an object of focus, at that time, what is the traveled, what is the being-traveled, and what is the untraveled, how should one distinguish them? It cannot be established, so why should one perversely discriminate the three times? Therefore, the cause of that which is spoken, travel itself is also without inherent existence. Thirdly, if it is said that whatever has an opponent exists, like light and darkness, the far shore and the near shore, doubt and certainty. Travel also has an opponent, abiding, so it exists, then, if abiding is inherently existent, then travel should also be inherently existent, but that does not exist. Like this, if it exists, it will not go beyond three possibilities, and also the traveler will not abide for a while, that will be explained later. The non-traveler also does not abide, if Devadatta is not a traveler, but an abider, then what need does he have for another abider? If this thing is established by its own characteristic, then it has already been established as an abider, therefore it must abide again, that is a fault. What third thing, other than the traveler and the non-traveler, would abide? There will not be, because that is impossible. If it is said that, other than the non-traveler and neither-nor, nothing else abides, but the traveler himself abides, then, how can it be reasonable to say that the traveler abides for a while? It will not be reasonable, because when the activity of traveling does not exist in the meaning of the word, then the term traveler will not be reasonable. Therefore, when saying "this abides," for him, the traveling that is contradictory to abiding
