Their tenet is that if either the earlier or later distinction is combined, the second is not needed, so they consider the two to be the same, but it is not that they do not apply the ultimate distinction to what is to be refuted, nor do they think that without combining either of the two, they can prevent arising, etc. As it says in the commentary on the Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds: 'The establishment of the form of cause and effect of an image without inherent existence is also knowingly, which wise person would regard form and feeling, etc., as abiding without difference from cause and effect, merely as existing, and would surely determine them to be with inherent existence, therefore, although they are regarded as existing, they do not arise by inherent existence.' Here, the difference between merely existing and existing by inherent existence is distinguished. If these are not distinguished, then once a thing exists, it has its own essence, and once its own essence does not exist, it completely disappears, thus not exceeding the two extremes of superimposition and denial, as it says in the commentary on the Hundred Treatises: 'If according to the view of those who say that things really exist, then as long as the existence of that thing is truly existent, so is its own essence. When it loses its own essence, since that thing does not exist at all for it, it is like a donkey's horn, because it does not exceed the two sayings, so all the manifest intentions here are difficult to establish.' Therefore, not existing by its own essence, thus being free from all extremes of existence, and being able to establish its cause and effect without inherent existence, thus being free from all extremes of non-existence, this seems to be the characteristic of these two teachers explaining the intention of the noble ones, therefore it is very important to distinguish between the two existences and the two non-existences. The two existences, existing by their own characteristics and merely established by the power of convention, are the same, and all things that exist in the conventional world are said to exist by the power of convention, regarding the way of establishing by the power of convention: 'I have accumulated karma, I experience the results,' for applying this convention, searching for how the basis on which this convention is applied exists? The eyes, ears, etc., individually and collectively are not me, and there is no me outside of these, this is the way in which the person is without inherent existence. Although this is the case, if I do not see, etc., then it will be harmed by the measure of convention, therefore it is established as existing, but since it has not become the essence of the thing itself...

It is through the power of terminology that it is established. The word "merely" in "merely established by the power of terminology" does not negate the self-entity of the meaning that is established by valid cognition. Similarly, the word "merely" in "merely named" does not negate the existence of a meaning that is not a name, nor does it negate the meaning that is established by valid cognition. It also does not show that everything named by a name exists in terminology, but it does negate existence by its own entity. Therefore, as it is said in the Ratnavali, "Apart from the imputation of terminology, what exists or does not exist? What is the meaning in the world?" As it is said, even if it is not established as existing by the power of terminology, it is not the case that everything established by the power of terminology exists. That is, even though there is no difference in how one searches for the meaning of what is established by the terminology of "seeing form through sacrifice" and "seeing through the substance of sacrifice," one cannot find even a little bit. However, the former, seeing that it does not exist in terminology, is harmed by valid cognition, while the latter, seeing that it can be refuted by valid cognition, is harmed by valid cognition because what exists in terminology is harmed by valid cognition. Therefore, existence and non-existence in terminology are completely different. The reason for this is that if one searches for substance with reason, one must find it, and if one does not find it, one can refute it. However, merely existing does not necessarily require finding it with reason, so even if one does not find it, one cannot prevent it. This method also depends on distinguishing between what cannot be examined by reason, what is harmed by reason, what cannot be found by reason, and what is prevented by it. If, when searching and examining, it is impossible for the examiner to find existence, and therefore one does not accept the meaning of existence in worldly terminology, then how is it not contradictory to accept any one of them when examining whether one is born or unborn, come or not come in the world? The methods of examining these two are completely different, because this is not being satisfied with the terminology of birth and coming that has been established, but rather it is the method of examining how the meaning of the established terminology exists, whereas the former is examining in that way. Therefore, when examining with a similar former method of examination, one does not accept the meaning of existence that the examiner can find, and even if one accepts the meaning of the latter examination, one does not accept existence by one's own entity. How can they be the same? The Autonomists examine in the same way as before, and that is only that.
