Furthermore, the cycle of the five realms is also established by distinguishing categories. Since it has been promised that karma does not exist independently, it is also not an eternalist argument. Because the teaching that "all karmas are not wasted" is the teaching of the Buddha, who is free from the sleep of ignorance. Since there is no fault of permanence or annihilation in karma, this observation that we speak of is the only reasonable one, they insist. The second part has three points: karma is without self-nature, therefore there is no permanence or annihilation; refuting that karma exists by its own nature; and showing by example that actions can be performed without self-nature. The first point is: if karma arises by its own nature, then if it remains until it ripens, it becomes permanent, and if it perishes, it becomes annihilation. However, since karma does not arise by its own nature, how can it become a permanent entity that exists by its own nature and an annihilation that perishes by its own nature? The reason is that karma is not established by its own nature, therefore. If karma does not arise by its own nature, then the sutra says: "The karmas of sentient beings, even after hundreds of kalpas, will not be wasted. When they gather and the time comes, the fruits will ripen." If it is said like that, then the intention of the Bhagavan is that because karma is not born of its own essence, it will not be wasted, that is how it is, therefore, that sutra is not harmful to us. The Sravaka school thinks that if karma is not born of its own nature, then karma must not exist, therefore it contradicts the statement that karma is not wasted. In order to answer this debate, (the answer is:) because it is not born of its own nature, it is not wasted, how is this related? Because not being wasted is considered to be the meaning of karma producing different results. There is no fault, if this refutation is considered from the point of view of the ultimate truth, then karma is not produced in the ultimate truth, therefore there is no reason for its fruit to be wasted. If it is argued that not being produced in the ultimate truth and not wasting different results in the conventional truth are contradictory, then it can be explained in many ways that they are not contradictory, and it will also be explained. If the reason that it is not born of its own nature is used to establish that different results are not wasted, then how can this reason establish that karma producing different results in the conventional truth is not contradictory? The Entering the Middle Way says: Why is that nature not destroyed?

Therefore, even without the alaya-vijnana, because of this ability, for some situations, even if karma has ceased for a long time, one should recognize that it can produce true results. As it is said, it should be known that in order to prove that meaning, this verse of the Root Wisdom was quoted in the Engaging Conduct Commentary at that time. Regarding this, it must be admitted that the two karmas accumulated earlier produce two fruits after a long time. Karma also ceases after the second moment of arising, so there is no karma immediately before the fruit, and the cessation of karma is also non-existent, so in order to answer the question of how karma produces fruit, in order to establish the power of ceased karma, some of our own schools establish the alaya-vijnana, others establish non-waste and attainment, and still others imagine the mind-continuum imbued with the habits of karma. If karma is not born from its own nature, then there is no cessation, and it is impossible for non-perishing karma to produce fruit, so since all karmas are imperishable, the relationship between karma and fruit is extremely reasonable, as stated in the Engaging Conduct Commentary. Non-cessation means: not ceasing by nature. As it is said, it means not ceasing by its own nature, but not denying conventional cessation. Because, for some situations, even if karma has ceased for a long time. And, similarly, from karma that has ceased and is not of its own nature, there is also fruit. As it is said, and at that time the Engaging Conduct Commentary also quoted the sutra, which said: What is said to be inexhaustible, and what is said to be the exhaustion of karma, is inexhaustible in terms of emptiness, and is shown to be exhausted in terms of convention. For this reason. To establish that destruction can function by the system of not admitting self-established dharmas, even in the conventional sense, is as previously explained. Therefore, even if one does not admit the alaya-vijnana, etc., the relationship between karma and fruit is reasonable. Because, why does it not cease by nature, therefore, the proof of what is said, and the production of fruit from ceased karma, are not contradictory. Those who believe that arising and ceasing, etc., are established by their own nature, since they believe that destruction is non-existent, it is not permissible to produce fruit from cessation. The destruction of the destruction of karma, the basis for transmitting similar types, is the continuum of the person in whom the thought "I am" arises, and that is also the basis for the connection between karma and fruit.
