All conditioned things are impermanent, they are subject to arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they cease; their subsiding is bliss. Thus, the cessation of the aggregates is annihilation, and whether the Tathagatas appear or not, the nature of all phenomena remains. Thus, permanence, the dharma by which sentient beings abide is one, namely the four foods. Thus, one meaning, the dharma that protects the world is two, namely knowing shame and having embarrassment. Thus, different meanings, the world comes from there, and goes from here. If it is asked whether it is unreasonable to say that there are eight things such as birth, the answer is made that, as quoted from the Clear Words, it is said in relation to the two, knowledge and appearance. The reason why such disputes arise is that by establishing birth and so on as conventional by the method of preventing establishment, the reversal of samsara and so on are also conventional, so there is no contradiction with the sutras. However, if there is no single place of establishment established by valid cognition for those conventional meanings, then just as a rope is mistaken for a snake, no cause and effect or anything else can be established for that snake, so it is not possible to establish those as conventional, so it is not possible to avoid faults. If there is an impeccable establishment established by valid cognition, then it is desiring the meaning established as ultimately true, but only not accepting the term, so it is a dispute. The answer to that is as will be explained in the twenty-fourth chapter, all those establishments must be able to distinguish from the path of reason that this tradition is suitable and others are not. If not, if there is no place to accept liberation and so on for the meaning that exists conventionally, and it is necessary to send it to a state of confusion, then it is a great mistake of view. Therefore, if one agrees with the idea that conventional dharmas are like that, then arguing about whether dharmas other than those exist truthfully is not the tradition of either the Madhyamikas or the proponents of the nature of things. In particular, once conventionality is accepted in this way, there is no place to establish a meaning established by valid cognition in it, so the acceptor and the vow of acceptance, and all the scriptures and reasons for establishing it, are not established by valid cognition, so establishing the true existence of dharma by valid cognition is a laughing stock.

If one can prevent these from being established in the ultimate sense, and is good at establishing the meaning established by valid cognition in name, then all the ultimate dharmas such as the Tathagatagarbha and Dharmakaya, even if they are not established as true, it is enough to admit their existence as characteristics. If these are not established as true, then it is meaningless to say that there is no realization of Suchness and no Dharmakaya to be attained. Therefore, the self-schools of the holy land who believe that the Dharma is true, generate great efforts to establish things as true, and before they believe that it is not established as true, they do not argue about whether others are established as true, which is a great characteristic that surpasses the sophists who do not understand the reason. Therefore, for things that can benefit or harm those with concepts, saying that it is true is a great source of error; and for unconditioned dharmas that cannot produce results, saying that it is true is a small source of error. Therefore, in this treatise, it is also said: "If the conditioned is completely non-existent, how can the unconditioned be established?" As it is said, emphasis is placed on preventing things from being true. In this way, since there are both statements in the Sutras that say that birth and death exist and that they do not exist, there will be doubts about which of these two is the teaching with the ultimate meaning and which is the teaching with intention, and in order to eliminate the wrong view of taking the provisional for the definitive, this treatise that distinguishes the definitive and provisional meanings is made. The detailed explanation of the meaning of these two can be understood from the essential determination made by the two founders of the chariot tradition on the good explanation of distinguishing the definitive and provisional meanings. Second, if it is said that showing that there are no eight things such as cessation in dependent origination is a prevention of all that is to be refuted, then it would be enough to express a little aspect with just the two verses "no cessation", why say so much? Neither of these two situations is the case. Then what is it? Although dependent origination has limitless differences, the reason for establishing eight things is that these are the main parts of the dispute. Because most of those who claim the nature of things show that things have nature through these eight things such as cessation. The focus of the dispute is whether birth and death have nature, which can also be known from the context, and it is also explained in Buddhapalita. People do not know what the meaning of birth and death is.
