There are two aspects of grasping, the latter being the direct perception of self-awareness. If it is said that therefore it apprehends all knowledge, then there is refutation by scripture, refutation by reason, refutation of the establishment of self-awareness, and refutation of the assertion that what is imputed is the basis of truly established entities. First, it is unreasonable for knowledge itself to experience and cognize itself in a way that the duality of appearance vanishes, because the protector of the world also said in the Sutra of Jewel in the Crown, using the example that the edge of a sword cannot cut the edge of the sword itself, that the mind cannot see the mind. For example, just as the edge of a sword cannot cut itself in any way, so too the mind cannot see the mind. Second, there is refutation of the example and refutation of the meaning. First, the refutation of the example of the lamp is: If it is said that, for example, a lamp illuminates both itself and other objects, so too knowledge cognizes both self and other, then the example is not established, because the lamp does not illuminate itself, because the lamp is not to be self-illuminated, because it neither needs nor can illuminate itself. If that is the case, then darkness would also obscure both self and other, which is unreasonable, because darkness is not obscured by darkness. If it were obscured, then like a vase obscured by a cloth, darkness would also become invisible. These should be understood in detail as explained in the Root Wisdom. The refutation of the example of crystal is: For example, like crystal, white crystal appears blue due to the basis, which is dependent on others and not on its own nature. But the blue of beryl itself appears blue by its own nature and is not dependent on others. Similarly, the cognition of some forms, etc., is dependent on other knowledge, and knowledge is self-cognizant, so it is also seen that there is no dependence on other cognizers. If it is said that the example of beryl's blue not arising from other causes is unreasonable, because the blue itself does not arise from other causes, therefore the blue is not made the nature of blue by its own essence.

Even though a candle does not illuminate itself, knowing that the candle itself is light, if it is said that way, then knowledge does not illuminate itself. If that is the case, then the mind itself is luminous. By what other entity does one know knowledge and then say that? It is unreasonable. If one knows through another entity, it will become endless. If one does not know oneself, and others do not know, then at any time, if no cognizer can see that knowledge, then saying that knowledge is luminous or non-luminous is meaningless, because the basis of knowledge itself is not established through valid cognition. Just as a barren woman's daughter cannot exist, it is meaningless to talk about her gait. The third part: examples of how memory arises even without self-awareness, and refuting the unreasonableness of cognizing other things if self-awareness does not exist. The first point is: if self-awareness does not exist, how does the consciousness with an object become memory? It will not become memory, therefore, experience can be inferred from the sign of memory. For example, when recalling "I saw blue before," the memory follows the experience, so from the sign of the memory of the object "saw blue," it can be established that the experience of the object exists. And the experience of the object itself is the apprehension of blue. From the sign of the memory of the subject "I saw," it can be established that the experience of the subject exists. And the experience of the subject is self-awareness. Whatever the experiencer of the apprehension of blue is, self-awareness can also be established through reasoning that eliminates other possibilities. If it is said that the memory of the subject is not established by self-awareness, because when experiencing the object of the apprehension of blue—blue—one recalls "I saw this blue before," memory arises from the separation of the object and the subject, or rather from the connection, not from the experience of the subject, just like the numbness after a mouse bite, even if the toxicity was not experienced at the time, it will be recalled later. For example, in winter, when a child's body feels numb, even if the mouse's poison has entered the body, only the numbness is experienced, not the toxicity. Later, when hearing thunder, one recalls that the toxicity had entered the body when it was numb. But in reality, the toxicity was not experienced before. Among them, the numbness after a mouse bite is like the apprehension of blue experiencing the object. The simultaneous entry of numbness and toxicity into the body is like the simultaneous existence of the object being grasped and the subject. At that time, the subject did not experience itself, just like not experiencing the toxicity when numb.
