Accomplished by the questioning of the son of the desireless one. Furthermore, if one wishes to protect merit, one should not regret, and even if one has done it, one should not proclaim it. This means that after accumulating virtuous roots, if one regrets it, and if one boasts of virtuous roots unless necessary, the benefit is small, so one should rejoice, and not proclaim what has been done, so that after accumulation it becomes more powerful. This was requested by the powerful one and accomplished by quoting from the Jewel Cloud Sutra. Furthermore, if one wishes to protect merit: One should fear gain and honor, and always abandon pride. One should respect Bodhisattvas, and abandon doubt in the Dharma. This means that if one clings to gain and honor, or becomes arrogant, etc., after making the virtuous roots powerful in this way, the fruit of the virtuous roots will be delayed, so one should not cling to gain and honor, one should always abandon pride, one should respect Bodhisattvas, and not abandon the sacred Dharma, these four protect the fruit of virtuous roots from being delayed. This was accomplished by the Jewel Heap Sutra and others. The reason why attachment to gain is not mentioned, but pride is mentioned, is that attachment to gain and honor may be allowed when necessary, but pride is not allowed. Fourth, the method of preventing the faults previously committed is: First, the reason why the body needs to be purified is: If the body is purified, it will be transformed into a beneficial enjoyment, like cooked rice, a stainless body can also benefit. This means that it is quoted from the Secret Sutra of the Blessed One. Also, if the seedlings are covered with grass, they will weaken due to disease and will not grow. Likewise, the Buddha's seedlings, if covered by afflictions, will not grow. This means that if afflictions are removed by antidotes, they will increase. What is the purity of the body? It is the purification of sins and afflictions. The way the Perfect Buddha said it is: If you don't try, you will go to the lower realms. This means that one should strive to purify sins and afflictions, and if one does not do so, one will fall into the lower realms. There are four ways to purify sins: the antidote to refute sins, the practice of the antidote, the means of turning away from sins, and the power of reliance.

Regarding the practice of universally overcoming obstacles, there are two types: general confession of sins and confession of bodhisattva transgressions. The first comes from the "Golden Light Sutra," and the second comes from the "Upasaka's Questions Sutra." For both minor and major transgressions of attachment and aversion, and for major transgressions arising from hatred, one should confess to a group of ten; for major transgressions arising from ignorance, one should confess to a group of five; grasping a woman's hand, looking with the eyes, and lustful thoughts are also transgressions, and one should confess these heavily to one or two individuals. If a bodhisattva commits the five uninterrupted crimes, and transgressions arise from women, hands, children, stupas, or the Sangha, and other transgressions besides these, one should confess to the thirty-five Buddhas. The universal practice of antidotes is accomplished through the "Diamond Sutra" and others. The power of turning away from wrongdoing is achieved through the "Noble Essence of the Sun Sutra" and others. The power of reliance is achieved through the "Noble Maitreya's Discourse on Liberation" and others. One aspect of purifying the body, the purification of afflictions, has three parts. Among these, the obstacle to the antidote is the practice of patience, which includes the patience of accepting suffering and two other types of patience. The first is: One should endure. That is, suffering, insults, and harsh words. What is called unpleasantness refers to the four undesirable aspects arising from oneself or one's friends. Without attachment, one accepts the undesirable aspects of not fearing and desiring the opposite of the four desirable aspects, and one prevents the unpleasantness arising from obstructing desired things by preventing the hatred arising from it. This meaning is accomplished through the "Moon Lamp Sutra" and others. The second, the other two types of patience, are achieved through the "Noble Sutra of the Questions of Ocean of Intelligence" and others. Fourth, the effort of application that accords with the antidote is: One should seek learning. That is, first, where should one apply effort? It is the praise of extensive learning, which is quoted from the "Sutra of the Questions of the Son of Non-Greed." How should the manner of learning be done? It is quoted from the "Noble Sutra of the Questions of Inexhaustible Intelligence." What is the application of learning? It is the few meanings and few actions in this context, and so on. The basis of learning is extremely vast wisdom.
