Other schools believe that the Svatantrika Madhyamaka has reasons and inferences to establish selflessness, but the Prasangika Madhyamaka does not. As it says in the Prasannapadā, "We are not establishing that this does not exist, so what is it? It is to prevent others from considering this to be existent." "Similarly, we are not establishing that this is existent, so what is it? It is to eliminate others' consideration that this is non-existent, because we want to eliminate the two extremes and establish the Middle Way." Moreover, the Prasangikas are said to only have the purpose of refuting others' tenets. As it also says in the Madhyamakāvatāra, "Whatever is a perverted concept, the wise say is the result of discrimination." Therefore, it is said that it is only refuting the views of others, not establishing selflessness. Saying that the necessity is only to cut off the object of negation is not a characteristic of the Prasangika. As it also says in the Tarka-jvālā, "It only refutes that earth and so on are not the nature of arising in the ultimate sense, but it does not establish that it is the nature of something else, nor does it establish that it is the nature of non-things." Therefore, when negating that phenomena are established by their own characteristics, saying that it is only cutting off the object of negation and only eliminating others' wrong conceptions, the word "only" is to cut off the throwing away of other dharmas that are not just negating the object of negation in the realm of reason, thereby preventing the thought of whether it is a negation of negation, thereby showing it as a negation. Because it is only cutting off its own object of negation and not establishing other dharmas, as previously stated. For example, saying that there is no smoke in the lake is only completely cutting off smoke in the lake, even if it does not throw away other dharmas besides that, but does that sentence not show that there is no smoke in the lake? Moreover, does the consciousness that follows it not determine that there is no smoke in the lake? Similarly, when showing that a sprout has no self-nature, even if it is only completely cutting off self-nature on the sprout, what contradiction is there in its sound and consciousness expressing and determining that the sprout has no self-nature? Therefore, there is no smoke in the lake, the words completely cut off, that is, express non-existence, and the consciousness also determines that cutting off smoke is determining non-existence. Because completely cutting off the object of negation and preventing it, if one does not exist, the other does not exist. Similarly, self-nature

The scriptures that demonstrate the absence of inherent existence state that the negation of inherent existence itself is the statement of no inherent existence. The reasoning consciousness that negates inherent existence understands that the negation of inherent existence itself is the understanding of no inherent existence, and the reason that negates inherent existence should be considered as establishing that the negation of inherent existence itself is the establishment of no inherent existence. One should not say that scriptures have no object to be stated, consciousness has no object to be known, and reason has no object to be established. Therefore, to say that reason merely negates inherent existence but does not establish the absence of inherent existence does not seem reasonable in any Madhyamaka-Prasaṅgika text. To say that "earth is not the nature of arising in ultimate reality" merely negates that it is the nature of arising in ultimate reality, and to say that this is doing a non-affirming negation means that it does not establish the nature of non-things. This does not mean that it does not establish the non-existence of things arising in ultimate reality, but rather that it does not establish the nature of non-things other than negation. Therefore, if one asks whether or not something other than the mere cutting off of the object of negation is established, that would be true. But after promising to thoroughly cut off the object of negation, how can it be appropriate to examine whether the negation has been made an object by reason and the consciousness of sound? If the existence of inherent existence is thoroughly cut off by reason, and thus the absence of inherent existence is established by reason, then how can one reconcile what the noble one said: "This is the negation of existence itself, it is not the complete grasping of non-existence, when saying it is not black, it is not said that it is not white." For example, when one wants to merely show that there is no blackness, and therefore says "this is not black," it is merely negating blackness, but it is not showing that it is white other than that. Similarly, when one says that something like a sprout has no inherent existence in ultimate reality, it is also merely establishing the negation of the existence of inherent existence in ultimate reality, but it is not establishing the existence of non-reality other than that. The commentary and explanation of the Lamp of Wisdom also explain that non-affirming negation is not the object to be established, but rather affirming negation. It can also be understood through examples, because when saying "it is not black," one does not say that it does not show that it is not black, but rather that it does not show that it is white. This scripture exists in the chapter on the world, and is spoken by Avalokiteśvara in ascetic practice. The way this doubt arises is: the sprout does not have ultimate arising, that is existent.
