Not abandoning is not forgetting. The second aspect has two parts: explaining based on what viewpoint it is said that there is no self-nature, and explaining based on what viewpoint it is said that there is no birth, etc. The first aspect has three parts: a general indication, a detailed explanation, and examples of those. The first is: In the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, it says: "O Real and Supreme One, I have said that the lack of self-nature of all dharmas is of three kinds, namely, the lack of characteristic self-nature, the lack of birth self-nature, and the ultimate lack of self-nature, based on which it is said that all dharmas are without self-nature." This indicates that it is based on the three kinds of lack of self-nature that it is said that there is no self-nature. In the *Compendium of Determinations* it is also said: "Based on what viewpoint did the Blessed One say that all dharmas are without self-nature?" The answer is: "Due to taming, in this and that, it is said based on the three kinds of lack of self-nature." The *Thirty Verses* also says: "Self-nature is of three kinds, in the three kinds of lack of self-nature, based on this it is said that all dharmas are the teaching of no self-nature." Therefore, those who say that in the *Prajñāpāramitā Sūtras* and other sutras, it is said that all dharmas are without self-nature, which is based on all conventional dharmas, and not based on the ultimate truth, this contradicts the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* and the treatises of the brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu, and also becomes a view that is contrary to the tradition of the noble father and sons. Like this, asking based on what viewpoint it is said that there is no self-nature, is asking based on what thought it is shown that there is no self-nature, and the way of no self-nature. The answer also shows these two in order. First, the explanation is: From form to all-knowing, the differences in the clarity of the dharmas are infinite, and it is said that these have no self-nature or own-being, these are all included in the three kinds of lack of self-nature, and if the way of their lack of self-nature is explained, considering it easy to understand, it is summarized into three kinds of lack of self-nature, namely, the ultimate truth and conventional all dharmas are included in these three. The necessity of doing so is that in the *Mother Sutra* and others, for all the dharmas of the five aggregates, eighteen elements, and twelve sources, it is said separately that there is no entity, no self-nature, and no self-nature, and especially

Therefore, in the scriptures, emptiness, the realm of phenomena, suchness, and all the names of the ultimate truth are mentioned, and it is said that these have no self-nature. Therefore, who would be rational to say that among the dharmas in these scriptures that proclaim the selflessness of phenomena, there is no ultimate truth? Second, if the dharmas that are said to be without self-nature are summarized into three kinds of selflessness, then what are these three? What is the way of selflessness? First, explaining the first kind of selflessness, as it is said in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "What is the characteristic of the selflessness of the characteristics of all dharmas? It is the characteristic of what is completely imputed. Why is that? Thus, it is the characteristic that is established by name and convention, not established by its own characteristic. Therefore, it is said to be the characteristic of selflessness." Here, the first two questions and answers explain the selflessness of the characteristic of complete imputation. Then, the reason is asked with "Why is that?" In response, from the negative aspect, it is said that it is not established by its own characteristic, and from the affirmative aspect, it is said that it is established by name and convention, explaining the reason. Through this distinction of the sutra, the following two kinds of selflessness can also be understood. The nature of the characteristic of non-existence in complete imputation refers to being established or existing by its own characteristic. Here, the criterion for whether or not it exists by its own characteristic depends on whether or not it is established by name and convention, and establishment does not necessarily mean existence, and the way of establishment is also absurd. Therefore, the existence of things is very inconsistent with the establishment of nominal terms, so the meaning of whether or not it exists by its own characteristic is also inconsistent. However, if there is attachment to the existence of its own characteristic, then there is also attachment to the establishment of absurd self-characteristics, and some things do not adhere to the former, but adhere to the latter. The second kind of selflessness, as it is said in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "What is the characteristic of the selflessness of the arising of all dharmas? It is the characteristic of the dependent arising of all dharmas. Why is that? Thus, it is born by the power of other conditions, not by itself. Therefore, it is said to be the characteristic of the selflessness of arising." The arising that does not exist in dependent arising
