Such a view should be regarded as the very nature of selflessness. Ultimate truth is authentic. In this regard, just as an illusion is created, so should one view birth as being without inherent existence. Ultimate truth is without inherent existence, and one should also view it as one. Ultimate truth is authentic. In this regard, just as the sky is completely separated and pervades everything merely by the nature of being without form, so should one view the ultimate truth of selflessness as being completely separated and pervading everything by the absence of self in phenomena. So it is said. The imputed is like a flower in the sky, which is merely an example of conceptual imputation, not an example of something impossible to know. The way in which the dependent is similar to illusion will be explained, and the meaning of the example of the thoroughly established is clear in the text. The way in which selflessness is spoken of is explained in this way, but if it is not so, and it is said that all three natures are not established by their own characteristics, then one is clinging to the literal meaning of the sutras that speak of selflessness. In that case, one will obtain a nihilistic or annihilationist view, because one is slandering all three natures, and therefore one will become a holder of the view of no characteristics. In this way, if the dependent is not established by its own characteristics, then arising will not be possible, so it is slandering it. If the thoroughly established is not without its own characteristics, then it will not become the nature of things. If one assumes that the view of not being established by one's own characteristics is a slander against the other two natures, then how will it become a slander against the imputed? If the other two natures are not without their own characteristics, then those two will become non-existent, and in that case, there will also be no basis for imputation and no term for the imputator, so the imputed will become completely non-existent. Thus, in the Explanation of Intentions, it is said: My intention, that is, the profound truth that is spoken, cannot be fully understood, and although one believes in this Dharma, all these Dharmas are only without inherent existence. All these Dharmas are only unborn. Only unceasing. From the beginning, it is only peaceful. By nature, it is only completely pacified, so the meaning of the Dharma

They cling only to the literal meaning. Because of that basis, they will attain the view of non-existence and the view of no characteristics towards all phenomena. Having attained the view of non-existence and the view of no characteristics, they will also denigrate all phenomena with all characteristics. They will also denigrate the imputed characteristics of phenomena, and they will also denigrate the dependent characteristics and the thoroughly established characteristics of phenomena. Why is that? Because the ultimate truth is authentic. Like this, if there are dependent characteristics and thoroughly established characteristics, then the imputed characteristics will also be thoroughly understood. Therefore, those who see the dependent characteristics and the thoroughly established characteristics as having no characteristics, they have also denigrated the imputed characteristics. Therefore, those are called denigrating all three types of characteristics. So it is said. The term "clinging to the literal meaning" refers to those sutras that explain the absence of inherent existence, such as "all phenomena are empty of nature, empty of essence, and empty of self-characteristics in the ultimate sense," and adhering to them as they are taught is the system of those who are said to cling to the literal meaning. Seeing the characteristics of dependence and perfect completion as without characteristics is to see that those two are not established by their own characteristics. Why is that? From "Why is that?" onwards, it shows the reason why it becomes a denigration of all three essences. If one grasps that there is no arising and ceasing by one's own characteristics, as it is said, then it will also become a denigration of dependence, so it should be known that it will also become a denigration of the other two, because if arising and ceasing are not established by one's own characteristics, it will become a system of no arising and ceasing. Second, if the way of no inherent existence is like that, then what is meant by saying that there is no birth, etc.? This is said with reference to the first and last absence of inherent existence. The first is from the Explanation of Intention Sutra: "Therefore, relying on the absence of characteristics, I have taught that 'all phenomena are unborn, unceasing, peaceful from the beginning, and naturally completely liberated.' Why is that? Because the ultimate truth is authentic. Like this,

That which is without its own characteristic is unborn; that which is unborn is unceasing. That which is unborn and unceasing is primordially peaceful; that which is primordially peaceful is naturally completely free from sorrow. That which is naturally completely free from sorrow has nothing whatsoever to be further freed from sorrow. Thus it is said. Because the reason for the absence of arising and ceasing in the imputed is the establishment of the absence of its own characteristic, it is also shown that if arising and ceasing exist, they are established by their own characteristic, and that in the dependent, there is arising and ceasing established by its own characteristic. Being free from arising and ceasing is unconditioned, so it is not possible to be a defiled phenomenon, therefore it is shown to be primordially peaceful and naturally free from sorrow, because here, "sorrow" refers to all defilements. Secondly, in the Explication of Intent it is said: "Also, considering that the ultimate absence of inherent existence is distinguished by the absence of self of phenomena, I have taught that all phenomena are unborn, unceasing, primordially peaceful, and naturally completely free from sorrow." Why is that? Because in this way, distinguishing the absence of self of phenomena by the ultimate absence of inherent existence is only abiding in the constant time of constancy and the steadfast time of steadfastness. That is the nature of phenomena, unconditioned, free from all defilements. In the constant time of constancy and the steadfast time of steadfastness, that which abides in the form of the nature of phenomena itself, being unconditioned, is unborn and unceasing because it is unconditioned. That is because it is free from all defilements, so it is primordially peaceful and naturally completely free from sorrow. Thus it is said. The constant time of constancy is the earlier and earlier time, and the steadfast time of steadfastness is the later and later time, as explained in the Great Commentary of China. So, here, on what basis are the three absences of inherent existence established, and why is the basis of the absence of arising, etc., not established on the intermediate absence of inherent existence? Also, in the Compendium of Topics it is said: "Because the nature of the imputed is the absence of inherent characteristics, the dependent is the absence of inherent existence of arising, and the perfectly established is the ultimate absence of inherent existence."
