Therefore, wise individuals must strive to understand its true meaning, which depends on distinguishing between the provisional and definitive meanings of the Buddha's teachings. Distinguishing between these two cannot rely solely on statements such as, "This is provisional, and this is definitive." Otherwise, the great commentators' writing of treatises distinguishing between the provisional and definitive would become meaningless. Moreover, there are many different ways of establishing the provisional and definitive in the scriptures. It is not possible to establish it merely by saying, "This is this," and if it is not universally applicable in general, then for individual provisional and definitive meanings, it is not possible to establish it merely by saying, "This is this." Therefore, in order to distinguish between the provisional and definitive meanings of the scriptures, one must follow the views of the great commentators who were prophesied to explain the provisional and definitive, and it must be well established that the meaning of the definitive scriptures is not led elsewhere, and that it cannot be led elsewhere, and its meaning must be established by reasoning. Ultimately, one must rely on impeccable reason to distinguish, because if one accepts a tenet that contradicts reason, then the speaker cannot be a reliable person, and the true nature of things must also have a basis for proof by reasoning. In view of this meaning, the Buddha said, "Monks or wise men, just as gold is tested by burning, cutting, and rubbing, thoroughly examine my words, and do not accept them out of respect." Therefore, there are two ways to distinguish between the provisional and definitive: the way of relying on the sutras and commentaries, and the way of relying on the teachings of Inexhaustible Intelligence. The first way is further divided into two: quoting the statements in the sutras, and the way of explaining their meaning. The first way is further divided into four: asking questions about the contradictions in the sutras, answering to eliminate the contradictions, determining the nature of the three natures, and asking about the meaning constituted by these. The first is stated in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "The Blessed One, on many different occasions, also taught the self-nature of the aggregates, the nature of arising, the nature of destruction, and also abandoning and completely knowing.

Just as with the aggregates, the Blessed One also taught about the ayatanas, dependent origination, and food. Similarly, combining these teachings, the Blessed One also taught about the self-nature of the truths, complete knowledge, abandonment, realization, cultivation, as well as the self-nature of the elements, various elements, multiple elements, abandonment, and complete knowledge. The Blessed One also taught about the self-nature of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, incompatibility, antidotes, causing the unarisen to arise, causing the arisen to abide, non-forgetfulness, rebirth, and increasing vastness. The Blessed One also taught, 'All phenomena are without self-nature, all phenomena are unborn and unceasing, from the very beginning they are peaceful, and by nature, completely liberated.' Blessed One, I wonder, with what intention did you say, 'All phenomena are without self-nature, all phenomena are unborn and unceasing, from the very beginning they are peaceful, and by nature, completely liberated'? Blessed One, I would like to ask you about the true meaning of your saying, 'All phenomena are without self-nature, all phenomena are unborn and unceasing, from the very beginning abiding in peace, and by nature, completely liberated.'
