It is because one desires to attain the ground. The thought of giving, thinking "I will give this object," and the thought of restraint, thinking "I will restrain this misdeed," and all such virtuous thoughts, if they are the self-grasping of phenomena, holding onto the three spheres, then those who have attained the view of the selflessness of phenomena should reject them in every way, just as they would reject hatred and pride, and so forth. It is not proper to cultivate them intentionally. If all thoughts of "This is this" are taken as the self-grasping of phenomena, thinking of the three spheres, then regarding all of the qualities of the spiritual friend and the contemplation of leisure and endowment being meaningful, and remembering death, and contemplating the suffering of the lower realms, and taking refuge, and this result arising from this action, and love, and compassion, and cultivating the mind of enlightenment, and learning the precepts of the Engaging Mind, it is absolutely necessary to generate certainty by thinking, "This is this," "This arises from this," and "This has these qualities and these faults." Therefore, the greater the certainty in these, the more the self-grasping of phenomena increases. Conversely, the more one cultivates certainty in the selflessness of phenomena, the smaller the certainty in those paths becomes. Thus, the two aspects of conduct and view become contradictory like hot and cold, and there is no way to generate strong and lasting certainty in both. Therefore, just as attaining the Dharmakaya and attaining the Rupakaya are not contradictory in the state of fruition, so too, on the path, it is necessary to have a non-contradictory way of generating certainty in the freedom from elaboration, in which not even a particle of the object of grasping at the signs of the two selves remains, and also generating certainty in "This arises from this" and "This has these faults and qualities." This depends on how the view of the basis, the two truths, is established. If, through scripture and reasoning, one establishes that all phenomena of samsara and nirvana do not have even a particle of inherent existence in their way of abiding or existing, then that is the valid cognition that establishes the ultimate truth. And if one establishes the valid cognition of the conventional truth, which ascertains cause and effect separately without confusing even a little of the phenomena of cause and effect, and if one gains certainty that these two not only do not become harmful to each other, but rather become helpful to each other, then from that point on, one will realize the meaning of the two truths and the intention of the Victorious Ones.

It is in the number called "ྙེད་པ་." The meaning of the third scripture is: The occasion of that sutra is the time to analyze birth and so on, so it is considered to show that generosity and so on are not merely born from that (birth, etc.). It is said that this is merely established by discrimination, but the last part of the "Stages of Meditation" says that it does not show that those should not be relied upon but should be abandoned. It is not enough to rely on only one path. In the "Collected Sutras," it is also clearly stated: A Bodhisattva without skillful means should not diligently engage in the profound Dharma. In the "Inconceivable Secret Sutra," it also says: Son of good family, for example, fire burns from causes, and if there are no causes, it will be extinguished. Similarly, the mind burns from objects, and if there are no objects, the mind will be extinguished. Therefore, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means, with the perfection of wisdom completely purified, also knows that objects are close to pacification, and also does not make the object of the root of virtue close to pacification. He also does not cause the object of afflictions to arise, and also abides in the object of the perfections. He also separately contemplates the object of emptiness, and also looks at the object of great compassion for all sentient beings. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between the way of no object and the way of having an object. Similarly, it is necessary to loosen the bonds of afflictions and clinging to characteristics, and it is necessary to tightly bind with the rope of discipline, and it is necessary to destroy the two faults, and one must not destroy virtuous deeds. Therefore, the binding of discipline and the binding of clinging to characteristics are not the same, and the loosening of guarding vows and the loosening of clinging to self are also not the same. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully study the meaning of destruction and self-liberation, etc. Teacher Kamalaśīla said: The way to prevent non-attention is to establish the meaning of reality on the view, and then not to pay attention to anything else, but to abide single-pointedly and meditate, which is not prohibited. Rather, it is said that the view does not abide on the meaning of establishing the meaning of reality, and the mind does not think about anything and abides, merely abiding, which is to prevent making emptiness the meditation of meditation. This is the same for both mantra and perfection. However, it is necessary to observe with the discriminating wisdom of each school.
