Thus, from this time until reaching the essence of enlightenment, I take refuge in the supreme assembly, the irreversible noble bodhisattva sangha. Repeat this three times. Make a request for each refuge object, and although the words of refuge in the Dharma are different from others, they are as in the ritual composed by Jowo. Third, the precepts previously taught in the context of the lesser being should also be spoken here by the teacher. Second, perform the seven-branch offering as before, in front of the direct and indirect lamas, and the field of merit mentioned earlier. Third, as previously stated, clearly establish the object of loving-kindness and compassion. Second, in front of the teacher, kneel with the right knee on the ground or squat, and generate the mind of enlightenment with palms together. It is not merely generating the thought of attaining Buddhahood for the benefit of others, but with the aim of generating this mind, vowing not to abandon it until enlightenment is attained. Therefore, this thought should be generated by relying on the ritual. If one cannot train in the precepts of such an aspiration mind, then one should not do it; if one only generates the thought that I will become a Buddha for the benefit of all sentient beings through the ritual, then it is sufficient for all those who can or cannot train in the precepts of the mind of enlightenment. Both are acceptable for the aspiration mind. If one is taking the engaging mind through ritual, it is not permissible if one does not train in the precepts. Therefore, it is unreasonable to think that there is a distinction between what can and cannot be done in the many sets of vows transmitted from Nagarjuna and Asanga. In the instructions of Gsalgyal, it is also said: If one cannot train in the precepts of generosity and so on, even just generating the mind of enlightenment can accomplish much merit, as a source. It says that even those who cannot train in all the perfections in every way should generate the mind of enlightenment with skillful means in order to obtain a greater result. As stated in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation, it is very clear that one can generate the mind of enlightenment for those who do not train in the precepts of generosity and so on, but one cannot take the vows. The ritual for taking the mind of enlightenment is: The Buddhas residing in the ten directions

May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas heed me. May the Guru heed me. I, named so-and-so, in this life and in other lives, with the roots of virtue of the nature of generosity, the nature of ethics, and the nature of meditation that I have done, and have caused to be done, and have rejoiced in doing, just as the Buddhas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones of the past, and the great Bodhisattvas who dwell upon the great earth, have generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, so too, I, named so-and-so, from this time forth, until I reach the essence of enlightenment (Bodh Gaya), shall generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete great enlightenment. I shall liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated. I shall free those who have not been freed. I shall give breath to those who have not breathed. I shall lead to complete Nirvana those who have not passed into complete Nirvana. Say this three times. The refuge ceremony and these two, although it is not explicitly stated that they need to be recited after the teacher, they are actually necessary. These are the cases where there is a teacher. If a teacher is not found, what should be done? In the "Ceremony for Generating the Mind of Enlightenment" composed by Jowo (Atisha), it says: Even without a teacher, the ceremony for generating the mind of enlightenment oneself is: contemplate the Tathagata Shakyamuni and all the Tathagatas of the ten directions, and after performing prostrations and offerings, etc., make requests, and omit the word "teacher," and proceed with the order of taking refuge, etc., as before. As it is said. Three is: the teacher should tell the student the precepts of the aspiration mind. Two is: one is to teach the cause of not losing the mind of enlightenment in this life, and the other is to teach the cause of not being separated from it in future lives. The first has four: one is to remember the benefits in order to increase joy and enthusiasm for the mind of enlightenment; two is to cultivate generating the mind six times in order to truly increase the mind of enlightenment; three is to remember the sentient beings for whom the mind is generated.
