The actions that arise from the principal basis: good and non-good, the five are very great. Therefore, strive to practice virtue. That is (from the scriptures). That is, dividing the basis of qualities, such as the Three Jewels, and the basis of benefit, such as parents, into two, so there are five. The second has four: powerful from the perspective of the field, powerful from the perspective of the object of reliance, powerful from the perspective of the object, and powerful from the perspective of intention. The first is: the Three Jewels, the lama, those similar to the lama, parents, etc. For these, even if there is no strong intention, even if a small benefit or harm is done, it will result in great merit and demerit. As it is said in the Mindfulness Sutra: Even if a small object of the Three Jewels is taken without permission, if it is returned, the sins of the Buddha and Dharma will be purified, but the sins of the Sangha will not be purified until the feeling is experienced. If it is food that enters the mouth, it will be born in a great hell; if it is another object, it will be born in the great dark realm of Avici. Bodhisattvas are fields of good and non-good, and their power is very great. In the Mudra Sutra of Entering the Power of Increasing Faith, it says: If someone angrily imprisons all sentient beings of the ten directions in a dark prison, it is better to angrily turn away from the Bodhisattva and say, 'I will not look at this unpleasant person!' This will generate countless sins. Destroying and burning stupas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River is not as bad as generating anger and harmful thoughts towards a Bodhisattva and speaking unpleasant words, as mentioned before. In the Mudra Sutra of Entering the Determined and Undetermined, it says: Plucking out the eyes of sentient beings in the ten directions and then restoring their sight with loving-kindness, or releasing the former sentient beings from prison and placing them in the bliss of a Chakravartin or Brahma, is not as good as looking at a Bodhisattva who has faith in the Great Vehicle with joy, wanting to see him with joy, and praising him, which will generate countless merits. In the Sutra of the Miraculous Transformation of Perfect Tranquility, it also says: Killing all the sentient beings of Jambudvipa or stealing all their possessions is not as bad as obstructing the virtue of a Bodhisattva giving even a single morsel of food to an animal, which will generate countless sins. Therefore, one must be very careful in this matter.

This should be done. Secondly, even a small iron ball will sink to the bottom, but the same iron made into a container, even if it is large, will float on the surface. Similarly, the sins committed by the unwise and the wise are said to have different weights. For the former, if there is regret, and for the latter, if there is restraint, and if sins are not concealed, but the antidote of virtue is practiced, then for such a wise person, the sins are light. If this is not done, but knowingly committed with a contemptuous attitude, then for the wise who are self-righteous, the sins are heavy. It is also said in the Sutra of the Heap of Jewels that if all the beings of the three thousand great thousand worlds enter the Great Vehicle and possess the rule of a wheel-turning king, and each one uses a lamp vessel as large as the ocean, filled with lamp oil as large as Mount Sumeru, to offer to the stupa of the Buddha, it is not as good as the merit of a bodhisattva who has left home from a layperson's status, who smears the wick of a lamp with sesame oil and offers it in front of the stupa, not even a hundredth part of the merit. This shows that there is no difference in intention and field, but the offerings themselves are very different, but it clearly shows the power of reliance (on the offerings). Through this reasoning, it can be understood that whether there are vows or not, and even if there are vows, relying on one vow, two vows, or three vows to practice the path, the latter has greater merit than the former. For example, when a layperson performs acts of generosity and other virtuous deeds, if they can do so on the basis of holding vows such as the upasatha vows, the difference in the strength of the roots of virtue between doing so and doing so without vows is extremely large. In the Sutra of Subduing the Corrupt, it is said that if a person with ten non-virtuous deeds continuously accumulates sins for a hundred years, it is not as bad as a monk who has broken his vows, who wears the robes of a hermit and enjoys a meal offered by a devotee, whose sins are even more serious. This is also because the power of sin becomes stronger through reliance (on vows). In the Vinaya-vibhaṅga, it is also said: "It is better to eat an iron ball burning with flames than to eat the alms of the country without guarding one's vows and discipline." Here, both breaking vows and relaxing in learning and practice are criticized. The Buddha's teachings say: "The sins that rely on the Dharma are like crumbs of sin compared to the ten non-virtuous deeds." This shows its seriousness. Thirdly, for giving alms to sentient beings, there is the giving of Dharma and the offering to the Buddha.
